Readings and Homework from Philippians

Read the following from Philippians. Watch for the theme of "joy" as you read.

1:19-26  Paul's choice to live or die
     v. 21--for me to live is Christ

2:1-13  the example of Christ
     vv. 6-7--Christ in the form of God emptied himself
     vv. 12-13--work out your salvation; God is at work

3:1-21  the example of Paul
     v. 7--counted gain as loss
     v. 9--no righteousness of my own
     v. 10--share Christ's sufferings
     v. 12--I press on
     v. 20--our commonwealth is in heaven
     v. 21--change our lowly body to be like his glorious body

4:1-20  concluding exhortations
     v. 6--don't worry but pray
     v. 7--the peace of God which passes all understanding
     v. 8--things to think on
     v. 11--learned to be content
     v. 13--I can do all things in him who strengthens me

Briefly answer the following questions on another sheet of paper for homework. Be sure to put your name on it.

  1. Does Paul think that he will live or die as a result of his imprisonment?

  2. What confession will every person make either sooner or later?

  3. What three things does Paul call those who want Christians to be circumcised?

  4. To What Jewish sect had Paul belonged?

  5. What two women who were feuding did Paul want to agree?

  6. What church or churches supported Paul financially when he first left Macedonia?

Bonus: What person brought a money gift to Paul?
