God Is Greater Than Our Hearts
1 John 3:19-24

Bible Thought: "By this we shall know that we are of the truth, and reassure our hearts before him—whenever our hearts condemn us; for God is greater than our hearts, and he knows everything" (1 John 3:19).

One of Satan's many tools to drag us down into sin is "doubt"—doubts about many things, but especially doubts as to whether we are really children of God. But God's Word provides the way to overcome doubt. 1 John 3:18-20 tells us that if we are showing our love for others by our deeds, we can know that we belong to God. Sometimes when we look at our lives, doubts and uncertainty may arise in our hearts. We may say, "I am not worthy to be saved." We are right! We are not worthy. But we are not the one who saves us. God is! And he is greater than our hearts. John writes that if we are living a life of love and faith, we can reassure our hearts before him. Jesus Christ the righteous is our advocate with the Father. He is the one who will appeal our case before the judge. And it is his blood which cleanses us from every sin. (See 1 John 1:7; 2:1.) With this knowledge we can overcome our doubts. We can have confidence and approach God in prayer with boldness, because he will answer the prayers of his children.

Hymn: "Blessed Assurance."

Father, thank you for being greater than our hearts and for reassuring us when we doubt through your Son, Jesus Christ. In his name. Amen.
