The First Children in the World

The name of the first man was Adam and the first woman was named Eve. After God sent them out of the park in Eden, they had a child-a baby boy. Eve named him Cain. Later she gave birth to another son and named him Abel. When the boys grew up, Cain became a farmer, while Abel became a shepherd.

Now since people had sinned, God told them to offer sacrifices. These sacrifices were to teach them the meaning of Jesus' sacrifice on the cross. They would pile up stones into what was called an altar. Then they would put wood on the altar and their offering on the wood. If the offering was an animal, they would kill it first. Then they would set fire to the wood and burn up the offering.

Cain and Abel brought offerings to God. Cain brought some of the crops he had grown, while Abel brought some of the first lambs born to his sheep. Because Abel believed in God, he offered a better sacrifice than Cain did. God was pleased with Abel's offering. This made Cain angry. So God said to Cain, "Why are you angry? Why is your face sad? If you do right, you will be accepted. But if you do wrong, sin is waiting to attack you. It wants to rule you, but you must overcome it."

Then Cain said to his brother, "Let's go out to the field." When they were in the field, Cain attacked his brother Abel and killed him. Then God said to Cain, "Where is your brother Abel?" Cain answered, "I don't know. Am I supposed to take care of my brother?" Then God said, "What have you done?" The voice of your brother's blood is crying to Me from the ground. Now you are under a curse. When you work the ground, it will no longer grow good crops for you. You will be a homeless wanderer on the earth." And Cain said, "This punishment is too much. You are sending me away to wander on the earth, and anyone who finds me will kill me." So God put a mark on Cain to warn people not to kill Cain. Then Cain left God's presence and went away to a land called Nod. There he and his wife had children and he built a city.

Adam and Eve had other children. One son was named Seth. These children had children who grew up to have children. After many years Adam died when he was 930 years old. At that time people lived to be hundreds of years old. As more and more people were born, people became worse and worse. They were always thinking of evil things to do. There were very few good people left. One of them was a man named Enoch, the great-great-great-grandson of Seth. He obeyed God and pleased Him, so when he was 365 years old, God took him and he did not die. Enoch's son Mathuselah lived to be the oldest man in the world. He died when he was 969 years old. His grandson, named Noah, was also a man who pleased God.
