In the very beginning of time, God made the whole world. At first the earth was dark and empty and did not have real shape. It was all covered with water. But God's Spirit was there. Then God said, "Let there be light." And suddenly light was in the world. God saw that the light was good and He separated the light from darkness. He called the light "Day" and the darkness "Night." This was on the first day of the world.
Next God said, "Let there be a space between the waters that will separate them." So God made a space that separated the waters that were above it from the waters below it. Then He called the space "Sky." This was on the second day.
Then God said, "Let the waters under the sky be gathered to one place, and let dry land be seen." And so it happened. God called the dry land "Earth" and the waters that gathered together "Seas." And God saw that this was good. Then He said, "Let there be plants on the earth-plants with seeds and fruit trees." And so plants were made and God saw that this was good too. This was on the third day.
Then God said, "Let there be lights in the sky to separate the day from night and to light up the earth." So God made two big lights-the sun for the day and the moon for the night. He also made the stars. He put them all in the sky and then He saw that all this was good. This was on the fourth day.
Next God said, "Let there be animals in the waters and birds to fly in the sky." So God made all the animals, large and small, that live in the water and all the birds. And he saw that this was good so He blessed them, "Have many babies and fill up the waters and have many baby birds." This was on the fifth day.
Then God said, "Let there be all kinds of animals on the earth-cattle and wild animals and animals that crawl on the ground." So God made all the different animals and He saw that this was good. Then God said, "Let us make people that are like us. Let them rule over the fish in the sea, over the birds in the air, over the cattle, and over all the animals that crawl on the ground." So God made a man out of the dirt from the ground. The He breathed life into the man and the man became alive. And God made a park in the land of Eden for the man to live in and take care of. It had all kinds of fruit trees, even the tree of life and the tree of knowledge of good and evil. God told the man, "You may eat of all the fruit trees except the tree of knowledge of good and evil. The day you eat of it you will die." Then God said, "It is not good for the man to be alone. I will make a helper for him." So God brought all the animals to the man and had the man name them. But none of them could be his helper. Then God caused the man to fall asleep, and while he was asleep God took one of his ribs from his body and made it into a woman. When God brought her to the man, he said, "Here at last is bone from my bones and flesh from my flesh! She will be called "Woman" because she was taken out of man." And God told them, "Have many babies and fill up the earth. Rule over the fish of the sea and the birds of the air and all the animals on the earth." And God saw that all the things that He had made were very good. All this happened on the sixth day.
So the world was made in six days. But on the next day, the seventh day, God rested from His work. This is why the week has seven days.
