After Jesus ascended back to heaven, the apostle peter described Jesus' life in this way: "You know about Jesus from Nazareth. God anointed him with the Holy Spirit and power. Jesus went about doing good and healing all the people who were being hurt by the devil, because God was with him" (acts 10:38).
In the first two chapters of Mark we read about several people whom Jesus healed. One Saturday Jesus was teaching at the Jewish church in the town of Capernaum. Suddenly a man who has an evil spirit inside him shouted out: "what do you want with us? I know who you are-God's holy One! But Jesus commanded the spirit, "Be quiet and come out of him." Then the spirit made the man shake and give a loud noise and come out of the man.
Then Jesus went home with Simon peter. Peter's mother-in-law was in bed sick with a fever. So Jesus went to her bed, took her by the hand and helped her stand up. The fever left her and she was healed. When the sun went down many people brought their sick friends and relatives to Jesus. He healed many people who had different kinds of sickness. He also forced many evil spirits to leave people.
On another day, a man who had a skin disease called leprosy came to Jesus. The man fell to his knees before Jesus and said, "You can heal me if you are willing." Jesus felt sorry for him, so he reached out his hand and touched him and said, "I am willing; be healed." And at once the man was made well.
A few days later, Jesus was teaching in a house. The house was full of people. They were even crowded around outside the door. Four men brought a man who could not walk to Jesus. But they could not get him in the house because of all the people. So they carried him up to the roof and made a hole I the roof. Then they lowered the bed with the paralyzed man on it through the hole to Jesus. When Jesus saw their faith, he said to the paralyzed man, "my child, your sins are forgiven." When he said this, some of the teachers of the Jewish Law said to themselves, Why does this man say things like this? He is saying things against God. Only God can forgive sins." Of course, they were right, but they didn't know that Jesus was God. Only God can forgive sins." So Jesus said to them, "why are you thinking these things? Which is easier: to tell a paralyzed man, your sins are forgiven, or to tell him, Stand up and pick up your bed and walk?" Of course, it is easier to say. "Your sins are forgiven," because if you say the other, then everybody will know at once weather you really have that power. Then Jesus said, "But so that you will know that the son of Man has power on earth to forgive sins, "-he said to the paralyzed man-" I tell you, stand up, pick up your bed and go home!" Immediately the man stood up, picked up his bed and left in front of everybody.
So Jesus healed people with evil spirits, with fever, with skin disease, and with paralysis. He also healed the blind and deaf and three times he even brought dead people back to life. All of these healings were done to show that he really was the Son of God.
Sometimes "faith healers" today Claim to heal people just like Jesus did. But they don't really. For one thing, Jesus was always able to heal the people who came to him. If a "faith healer" can't heal someone, he may say to the person, "you don't have enough faith," What he should say is, "I don't have enough power," But if he said that many people wouldn't give him money anymore. In the second place, when Jesus healed people they always got well right away. This doesn't always happen with the "faith healers." And in the third place, Jesus never asked for money because he could heal people. But whoever heard of a "faith healer" who didn't ask for money? Why, they asked for money all the time. As the apostle Paul wrote to the evangelist Timothy, "some people think that religion is a way to make money" (I Timothy 6:5).
Yes, Jesus is the great healer. He is no longer on earth going around healing people to show that he is the Son of God. But he does still heal people and we should pray to God in his name that the sick will get well (James 5:14-16; John 14: 13-14).
But more important than the healing of the body is the healing of the soul. Jesus does have the right to forgive sins. He shed his blood to forgive our sins (Matthew 26: 28). He promised, "The one who believes and is baptized will be saved" (Mark 16:16). We must let Jesus heal our souls. Our Bodies will die, but God will bring them back to life. But if our sick souls are never healed, God will destroy both body and soul in hell (Matthew 10:28). Yes, we need Jesus as our Healer!
