Peter and John were going up to the Jewish temple at nine o'clock in the morning when they saw a man being carried. He was born crippled and had never been able to walk. The people who carried him would put him at the door to the temple to ask those who came for money. When he asked Peter and John for money, Peter told him, "I do not have any silver or gold, but I am giving you what I do have: in the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, rise up and start walking!" Then Peter took the man's right hand and lifted him up. Suddenly the man's feet and ankles were strong. He jumped up and started walking and entered the temple courtyard with them. As he jumped around, he praised God. The people in the courtyard knew that he was the man who used to sit at the entrance to the temple and asked for money. They were very surprised at what had happened to him.
People came running together to see this man who had been healed. Peter told the people, "Why are you surprised as if we had the power to make him walk. The power was from the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. He has given glory to his servant Jesus. The governor Pilate wanted to release him, but you denied the Holy and Righteous One and asked for a murderer to be released instead. You killed the Prince of Life, but God raised him from the dead, and we are witnesses of his resurrection. It is the name of Jesus, through faith in His name, that has made this man strong and healed him."
Then Peter said, "I know that you and your rulers did not know what you were doing when you killed Jesus. But the prophets had told that the Christ was going to have to suffer. God has made happen what they said. So you need to repent and turn away from your sins so that God can send good times and send Christ Jesus back to you. He has to stay in heaven until it is time to restore all things, just like the prophets said will happen. Moses said that God would raise up a new prophet like him. He said to listen to that prophet or else be destroyed. In fact, all the prophets, starting with Samuel, preached about what has happened in these days. Also, God told Abraham that one of his descendants would bless all the families of the earth. So God raised up his Servant Jesus from the dead and sent him to bless you by turning you away from your wicked ways."
Now while Peter was preaching, the priests, the captain of the temple guard, and the Sadducees came up and were upset that Peter and John were saying that Jesus had risen from the dead. So, they put them in jail until the next day, but people believed, and just counting the men, the number came to 5,000.
The next day the Jewish rulers, elders, scribes, and chief priests all came together and asked Peter and John, "By what power or by what name did you heal this man?" Peter was filled with the Holy Spirit and said, "Rulers and elders, if we are being asked today about a good work done to a man who could not walk, then you and all the people of Israel should know that it is by the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, whom you crucified but God raised from the dead, that this man is standing before you healthy. Jesus is the stone that you rejected, but he has become the cornerstone. There is no other name under heaven by which we must be saved!"
When the Jewish leaders saw that Peter and John were bold even though they had never been educated, they understood that these men had been with Jesus. They couldn't say anything back to them because the man who was healed was standing there with them. So, they talked with one another and decided to warn them. They told Peter and John that they should not teach anymore in the name of Jesus. But Peter and John said, "Do you think it is right in God's sight for us to listen to you instead of listening to God? We cannot stop speaking about the things that we have seen and heard." The leaders warned them some more but let them go because all the people were praising God for the healing of the man. Then Peter and John met with the other disciples of Jesus and told them what had happened. They all prayed about it and asked God to make them bold to speak His word. When they finished praying, they were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak the word of God boldly. They are a good example for us. We should do the same.
