When Jesus was living on earth, he taught us a better way to live. In Matthew 5-7 we find some of the teaching that Jesus gave his disciples. This is called the Sermon on the Mount. In this sermon he listed six things that religious teachers of his time said to do, and then gave an even better teaching.

In Matthew 5:21-26 Jesus taught his followers not to get angry with people. He said, "You have heard it said to the people long ago, do not murder. But I say to you that everyone who is angry with his brother is in danger of being judged. …. And if anyone calls a person a fool, he is in danger of going to the hell of fire."

In Matthew 5:27- 30 Jesus taught his followers not to even think about committing sexual sin. He taught, "you have heard it said, do not commit adultery. But I say to you that everyone who looks at a woman in order to want her sexually has already committed adultery with her in his heart."

In Matthew 5:31-32 Jesus taught His followers not to get a divorce. He told them, "and it has been said, anyone who divorces his wife must give her a written divorce paper. But I say to you that everyone who divorces his wife causes her to commit adultery. The only reason for a person to divorce his wife is if she has had sex with another man. And anyone who marries a divorced woman commits adultery."

In Matthew 5:33-37 Jesus taught his followers not to lie. Some people tell so many lies that you don't know if what they are saying is true unless they swear it is. And some people even tell lies when they swear they are telling the truth. Jesus taught, "Again, you have heard it said to the people long ago, do not swear or lie, but do for the Lord what you have promised. But I say to you, do not swear at all. …. When you say yes you must mean yes, and when you say no you must mean no.

In Matthew 5: 38-42 Jesus taught his followers not to take revenge. He said, "You have heard it said, an eye for an eye, and a tooth for a tooth. But I say to you, do not fight back against a wicked person. If someone hits you on the right check, then turn the other cheek to him so he can hit it too. If a person wants to sue you and take your shirt, let him have your coat too. If someone forces you to carry something for him one mile, go with him two miles. Give to the one who asks from you; don't refuse the one who wants to borrow from you."

In Matthew 5: 43-48 Jesus taught his followers to love their enemies. He told them, "You have heard it said, Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you," He finishes this lesson by telling his disciples to try to be perfect like God is. God does good to both good and bad people. If we will do that, we will have a better life, and we will really be children of God.
