When Jesus was living on earth, he taught us a better way to live. Last time we talked about some of the teachings that Jesus gave his disciples in the Sermon on the Mount. He also taught them about things they are not supposed to do.
Jesus taught that we are not supposed to do good things in order to be seen by people. Rather we are supposed to do good things in order to be seen by God. He said that when we give money to help people who need it, we should not tell anybody about it. God knows, and that's enough. He said that when we pray to God we should not pray loudly on the street corners, but pray at home where only God will hear us. And when we pray we should not use a lot of words. God knows what we need before we even ask him. This is how Jesus said we should pray:
"Our father in heaven,
May your name be kept holy.
May your [heavenly] kingdom come.
May your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us today the food we need.
Forgive us for the things we have done wrong,
Just like we have forgiven those who have done wrong to us.
Do not lead us into temptation,
But rescue us from the devil."
Jesus also said that when we go without food in order to worship God, we should not let other people know we are hungry. God knows, and that is enough.
Then Jesus taught that we must not store up treasures for ourselves here on earth. Rather we must save up treasure in heaven by obeying God, because we will care most about the place where our treasure is. He said that we cannot serve both God and money at the same time.
He also said that we must not worry about food and clothes. God knows that we need these things. But we should keep seeking God's kingdom and his righteousness, and he will make sure we have all these other things we need. We will have enough trouble today without worrying about tomorrow.
Then Jesus taught that we must not find fault with other people. God will judge us in the same way that we judge other people. We must treat other people in the same way that we want them to treat us.
Jesus said that there are two roads that people may travel in this life. One is a hard, narrow road that leads to heaven. The other is an easy, wide road that leads to hell. Most people are on the easy road to hell. We must seek to be on the hard road to heaven.
Jesus also said that not everyone who calls him "Lord" is going to heaven. The only people who are going to heaven are those who do what the father in heaven wants. On the day of Judgment many people will say to Christ, "Lord, Lord we prophesied in your name; we cast out demons in your name; we did many miracles in your name." But Jesus will answer them, "Go away from me, you people who do wrong. I never knew you." We must make sure that we are doing what God says to do and not just calling Jesus "Lord" and doing what we want. If we do what God wants, we will be following the better ay of Jesus.
