Papias said it was written first in Aramaic, then in Greek

- many shorter concise stories
- gospel for the Jews
- uses word "church"
- uses "kingdom of heaven" instead of "kingdom of God"
- prominence on teaching (5 discourses)
- has opening genealogy
- mentions many cases of Old Testament fulfillment
- has birth narrative and Sermon on the Mount
