The Gospel According To
LUKE

Dedication to Theophilus

11Inasmuch as many have undertaken to compile a narrative about the things which have been accomplished1 among us, 2just as those who from the beginning were eyewitnesses and attendants of the word delivered [them] to us, 3it seemed good to me also, having investigated all things carefully2 from the very first, to write an [account] for you in orderly sequence, most excellent Theophilus, 4so that you may know the certainty of the things about which you were instructed.

The Announcement of the Birth of John the Baptist

5In the days of Herod, king of Judea, there was a certain priest named Zechariah,3 of the [priestly] division of Abijah;4 and his wife [was one] of the daughters of Aaron, and her name [was] Elizabeth. 6Now they were both righteous before God, walking in all the commandments and righteous requirements of the Lord blameless. 7And [yet] they had no child, because Elizabeth was barren, and both were advanced in years.5

8Now it happened [that] while he was serving as priest before God in the tour of duty of his division, 9according to the custom of the priestly office, he was assigned by lot to enter into the temple of the Lord and burn incense. 10And the whole multitude of the people were praying outside at the hour of incense. 11And there appeared to him an angel of the Lord standing on the right [side] of the altar of incense. 12And Zechariah was troubled when he saw [him], and fear fell upon him. 13But the angel said to him, "Quit being afraid, Zechariah, because your petition has been heard, and your wife Elizabeth will bear you a son, and you shall call his name John.

14And you will have joy and gladness,
and many will rejoice at his birth;
15for he will be great before the Lord,
and he shall not drink wine and liquor,
and he will be filled with the Holy Spirit,
even from his mother's womb.

Luke 1

16And he will turn many of the sons of Israel to the Lord their God,
17and he will go before him6 in the spirit and power of Elijah,
to turn the hearts of the fathers to the children,
and the disobedient to the insight of the just,
to make ready for the Lord a people prepared."

18And Zechariah said to the angel, "In what [way] shall I know this? For I am an old man, and my wife is advanced in years."7 19And the angel answered by saying to him, "I am Gabriel, who stand in the presence of God; and I was sent to speak to you, and to bring you this good news. 20And behold, you will be quiet and not able to speak until the day that these things happen, because you did not believe my words, which will be fulfilled in their time." 21And the people were waiting for Zechariah, and they started marveling that he was taking his time in the temple. 22And when he came out, he could not speak to them, and they perceived that he had seen a vision in the temple; and he kept nodding to them and remaining mute. 23And it happened [that] when the days of his ministry were fulfilled, he went to his [own] house.

24Now after these days his wife Elizabeth conceived, and she kept herself hidden five months, saying, 25"Thus the Lord has done to me in the days when he looked on [me], to take away my reproach among men."

The Announcement of the Birth of Jesus

26Now in the sixth month the angel Gabriel was sent from God to a city of Galilee named Nazareth, 27to a virgin betrothed8 to a man whose name [was] Joseph, of the house of David; and the virgin's name [was] Mary. 28And he came to her and said, "Hello, O favored one, the Lord [is] with you!"9 29But she was greatly troubled at the saying, and started considering what sort of greeting this might be. 30And the angel said to her, "Quit being afraid, Mary, for you have found favor with God. 31And behold, you will conceive in [your] womb and give birth to a son, and you shall call his name Jesus.

32He will be great, and will be called the Son of the Most High;
and the Lord God will give to him the throne of his father David,
33and he will reign over the house of Jacob forever;
and of his kingdom there will be no end."

34And Mary said to the angel, "How will this be, since I am not knowing a man [sexually]?" 35And the angel answered by saying to her,

"The Holy Spirit will come on you,
and the power of the Most High will overshadow you;
therefore the holy [child] to be born10 will also be called
the Son of God.11

36And behold, your relative Elizabeth has even conceived a son in her old age; and this is the sixth month with her who was called barren. 37For nothing from God12 will be impossible." 38And Mary said, "Behold, [I am] the slave-maid of the Lord; may it happen to me according to your word." And the angel departed from her.

Mary's Visit to Elizabeth

39Now Mary arose in these days and went with haste into the hill country, to a city of Judah, 40and she entered into the house of Zechariah and greeted Elizabeth. 41And it happened [that] when Elizabeth heard the greeting of Mary, the baby leaped in her womb; and Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit 42and she called out with a loud cry and said, "Blessed [are] you among women, and blessed [is] the fruit of your womb! 43And why [is] this [granted] me, that the mother of my Lord should come to me? 44For behold, when the sound of your greeting came to my ears, the baby in my womb leaped in great joy. 45And blessed [is] she who believed that there will be13 a fulfillment of what has been spoken to her from the Lord." 46And Mary14 said,

"My soul magnifies the Lord,
47and my spirit is overjoyed in God my Savior,
48because he has looked on the humble state of his slave-maid.
For behold, from now [on] all generations will call me blessed;
49because the Powerful One has done great things for me,
and holy [is] his name.
50And his mercy is on those who fear him

56And Mary remained with her about three months, and returned to her home.

The Birth of John the Baptist

57Now Elizabeth's time came16 for her to give birth, and she bore a son. 58And her neighbors and relatives heard that the Lord had shown his great mercy to her, and they were rejoicing with her. 59And it happened [that] on the eighth day they came to circumcise the child; and they were calling him Zechariah after the name of his father, 60but in response his mother said, "Not [so]; but he shall be called John." 61And they said to her, "There are none of your relatives called by this name." 62And they started making signs to his father [to find out] what he would wish him to be called. 63And he asked for a writing tablet, and wrote, saying, "His name is John." And they all marveled. 64And instantly his mouth was opened and his tongue [loosed], and he started speaking, blessing God. 65And fear came on all their neighbors. And all these things were being talked about throughout the whole hill country of Judea; 66and all who heard [them] laid [them] up in their heart, saying, "What then will this child be?" For indeed the hand of the Lord was with him.17

The Birth of Jesus
(Mt. 1:18-25)

21Now it happened [that] in those days a decree went out from Caesar Augustus for all the inhabited [earth] to be registered. 2This was the first registration, when Quirinius was governor of Syria. 3And everyone was going to be registered, each to his own city. 4And Joseph also went up from Galilee, from the city of Nazareth, to Judea, to the city of David, which is called Bethlehem, because he was of the household and family of David, 5to be registered with Mary, who was betrothed1 to him and was pregnant. 6Now it happened that while they were there, the days came2 for her to give birth. 7And she gave birth to her firstborn son and wrapped him in strips of cloth, and laid him in a manger, because there was no place for them in the lodging place.3

The Visit of the Shepherds

8And in the same country there were shepherds living out in the fields and keeping watch over their flock by night. 9And an angel of the Lord stood by them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were filled with great fear.4 10And the angel said to them, "Quit being afraid; for behold, I am bringing you good news of a great joy which will be for all the people; 11because for you is born today in the city of David a Savior, who is Christ the Lord.5 12And this [will be] the sign for you: you will find a baby wrapped in strips of cloth and lying in a manger." 13And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God and saying,

14"Glory to God in the highest,
and on earth peace among men with whom he is pleased!"6

15And it happened that when the angels went away from them into heaven, the shepherds started saying to one another, "Let us now go over to Bethlehem and see this thing that has happened, which the Lord has made known to us." 16And they went with haste, and found Mary and Joseph, and the baby lying in the manger. 17Now when they saw [him] they made known the saying which had been told them about this child; 18and all who heard [it] marveled about the things told to them by the shepherds. 19But Mary was keeping all these things, pondering [them] in her heart. 20And the shepherds returned, glorifying and praising God for all that they had heard and seen, just as it had been told to them.

41And his parents went to Jerusalem every year at the feast of the Passover. 42And when he was twelve years [old], they went up according to the custom of the feast; 43and when the days [of the feast] were ended, as they were returning, the boy Jesus stayed behind in Jerusalem, and his parents10 did not know [it]. 44But supposing him to be in the company they went a day's journey, and they started seeking him among [their] relatives and acquaintances. 45And when they did not find [him], they returned to Jerusalem, seeking him. 46And it happened [that] after three days they found him in the temple [complex], sitting in the midst of the teachers, both listening to them and asking them questions. 47And all who heard him were being astounded at his intelligence and answers. 48And when they saw him they were astonished; and his mother said to him, "Child, twhy have you done us like this? Behold, your father and I have been seeking you anxiously." 49And he said to them, "Why [is it] that you were seeking me? Did you not know that I have to be in my Father's [house]?" 50And they did not comprehend the saying which he spoke to them. 51And he went down with them and came to Nazareth, and was subject to them; and his mother was keeping all these things in her heart.

52And Jesus kept increasing in wisdom and in stature,13 and [in] favor with God and men.

The Preaching of John the Baptist
(Mt. 3:1-12; 14:3; Mk. 1:1-8; 6:17; Jn. 1:19-28)

31Now in the fifteenth year of the government of Tiberius Caesar, Pontius Pilate being governor of Judea, and Herod being tetrarch of Galilee, and his brother Philip tetrarch of the region of Ituraea and Trachonitis, and Lysanias tetrarch of Abilene, 2in the high-priesthood of Annas and Caiaphas, the word of God came to John the son of Zechariah in the wilderness. 3And he went into all the region around the Jordan, preaching a baptism1 of repentance for2 the forgiveness of sins, 4as it is written in the book of the words of Isaiah the prophet,

"The voice of one crying in the wilderness:
'Prepare the way of the Lord,
make his paths straight.

5Every valley shall be filled,
and every mountain and hill shall be brought low,
and the crooked shall be made straight,
and the rough ways [shall be] made smooth;
6and all flesh shall see the salvation of God.'"3

7Therefore he was saying to the crowds that came out to be baptized4 by him, "[You] brood of vipers! Who warned you to flee from the future wrath? 8Therefore produce fruits worthy of repentance, and do not begin saying to yourselves, 'We have Abraham [as our] father'; for I say to you that God is able from these stones to raise up children for Abraham. 9And indeed already the axe is being laid to the root of the trees; therefore every tree that does not produce good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire."

10And the crowds started questioning him, saying, "What then should we do?" 11And he answered by saying to them, "The one who has two tunics must share with the one who does not have [any], and the one who has food must do so [too]." 12And tax collectors also came to be baptized,4 and said to him, "Teacher, what should we do?" 13And he said to them, "Collect no more than what you have been ordered to." 14And soldiers were also questioning him, saying, "And we, what should we do?" And he said to them, "Extort from no one by violence nor by false accusation, and be content with your wages."

15Now as the people were in expectation, and they all were reasoning in their hearts about John, whether perhaps he himself might be the Christ, 16John answered by saying to [them] all, "Indeed I am baptizing4 you [in] water; but the One who is mightier than I is coming, the strap of whose shoes I am not fit to unloose; he will baptize4 you in the Holy Spirit and fire. 17His winnowing fork [is] in his hand, to clean out his threshing floor, and to gather the wheat into his barn, but he will burn up the chaff with unquenchable fire."

18Indeed then, with many other exhortations also, he was proclaiming good news to the people. 19But when Herod the tetrarch was reproved by him for Herodias, his brother's wife, and for all the evil things that Herod had done, 20he also added this to [them] all, [that] he shut up John in jail.

And he ate nothing in those days; and when they were ended, he was hungry. 3Now the devil said to him, "If you are the Son of God, tell this stone to become a loaf of bread." 4And Jesus answered him, "It is written, 'Man shall not live on bread alone.'"1 5And [the devil] led him up,2 and showed him all the kingdoms of the inhabited [earth] in a moment of time. 6And the devil said to him, "I will give you all this authority and their glory; because it has been delivered to me, and I give it to whomever I wish. 7Therefore, if you would worship before me, it will all be yours." 8And Jesus answered by saying to him,3 "It is written,

'You shall worship the Lord your God,
and him only shall you serve.'"4

9And he led him to Jerusalem, and set [him] on the pinnacle of the temple [complex], and said to him, "If you are the Son of God, throw yourself down from here; 10for it is written,

'He will give his angels a command about you, to guard you.'

12And Jesus answered by saying to him, "It is said, 'You shall not put the Lord your God to the test.'"6 13And when the devil had ended every temptation, he departed from him until a convenient season.

The Rejection of Jesus at Nazareth
(Mt. 13:53-58; Mk. 6:1-6)

16And he came to Nazareth, where he had been brought up; and, as his custom was, he went into the synagogue on the sabbath day, and stood up to read. 17And there was given to him the scroll of the prophet Isaiah. He unrolled the scroll and found the place where it was written,

18"The Spirit of the Lord [is] on me,
because he has anointed me to proclaim the gospel to the poor.
He has sent me7 to preach release to the captives
and recovering of sight to the blind,
to set at liberty those who have been downtrodden,
19to preach the acceptable year of the Lord."8

20And he rolled up the scroll, and gave [it] back to the attendant, and sat down; and the eyes of all in the synagogue were looking intently at him. 21And he began saying to them, "Today this scripture has been fulfilled in your hearing." 22And all were testifying [well] of him, and marveling at the gracious words which proceeded out of his mouth. And they were saying, "Is not this Joseph's son?" 23And he said to them, "Doubtless you will quote to me this proverb,9 'Doctor, cure yourself; what things we have heard were performed at Capernaum, do also here in your hometown.'" 24And he said, "Truly, I say to you, no prophet is acceptable in his hometown. 25But in truth, I say to you, there were many widows in Israel in the days of Elijah, when the heaven was shut up for three years and six months, when a great famine came over all the land; 26and Elijah was sent to none of them except to a widow woman in Zarephath, [a city in the territory] of Sidon. 27And there were many lepers in Israel in [the time of] Elisha the prophet; and none of them was cleansed, except Naaman the Syrian." 28And all [those] in the synagogue were filled with anger when they heard these things. 29And they rose up and threw him outside the city, and led him up to the brow of the hill on which their city was built, that they might pitch him down headlong. 30But passing through their midst he started going [on his way].

The Man with an Unclean Spirit
(Mk. 1:21-28)

31And he went down to Capernaum, a city of Galilee. And he was teaching them on the sabbath. 32And they were astonished at his teaching, because his word was with authority. 33And in the synagogue there was a man who had a spirit of an unclean demon; and he cried out with a loud voice, 34"Ah!10 What have we to do with you, Jesus [you] Nazarene? Have you come to destroy us? I know who you are, the Holy One of God." 35And Jesus rebuked him, saying, "Hold your tongue,11 and come out of him!" And when the demon had thrown him down in [their] midst, he came out from him, having done him no harm. 36And amazement came on [them] all and they started speaking to one another, saying, "What [is] this word? Because with authority and power he commands the unclean spirits, and they come out." 37And a report about him was going out into every place in the region around [there].

The Healing of Many
(Mt. 8:14-17; Mk. 1:29-34)

38And he arose [and departed] from the synagogue, and entered into the house of Simon. Now Simon's mother-in-law was suffering from a high fever, and they made a request of him about her. 39And he stood over her and rebuked the fever, and it left her, and instantly she rose and started serving them.

40Now when the sun was setting, all those who had [any that were] sick with various diseases brought them to him; and he was laying [his] hands on each one of them and curing them. 41And demons were also coming out from many, crying out and saying, "You are the Son of God!" And he was rebuking [them] and not allowing them to speak, because they knew that he was the Christ.

A Preaching Tour
(Mt. 4:23; Mk. 1:35-39)

42Now when it was day he departed and went to a desolate place. And the crowds were seeking him and came to him, and tried keeping him from going away from them; 43but he said to them, "I have to proclaim the gospel of the kingdom of God to the other cities also; because I was sent for this [purpose]." 44And he was preaching in the synagogues of Judea.12

A Catch of Fish and Calling of Fishermen
(Mt. 4:18-22; 13:1-3; Mk. 1:16-20; 4:1-2)

51Now it happened that while the crowd was pressing on him and listening to the word of God, he was standing beside the lake of Gennesaret. 2And he saw two small boats resting1 beside the lake; but the fishermen had gone out of them and were rinsing [their] nets. 3And getting into one of the boats, which was Simon's, he asked him to put out a little from the land. And he sat down and started teaching the crowds from the boat. 4And when he had ceased speaking, he said to Simon, "Put out into the deep and let down your nets for a catch." 5And Simon answered by saying, "Master, we labored throughout the whole night and took nothing! But at your word I will let down the nets."2 6And when they had done this, they enclosed a large multitude of fish; and their nets2 started breaking. 7And they signaled to [their] partners in the other boat to come and help them. And they came and filled both the boats, so that they [began] to sink. 8But when Simon Peter saw [it], he fell down at Jesus' knees, saying, "Depart from me, because I am a sinful man, Lord." 9For amazement had seized him and all those with him at the catch of fish which they had taken; 10and likewise [it had] also [seized] James and John, sons of Zebedee, who were partners with Simon. And Jesus said to Simon, "Quit being afraid; from now [on] you will be catching men." 11And when they had brought [their] boats to land, they left everything and followed him.

The Cleansing of a Leper
(Mt. 8:1-4; Mk. 1:40-45)

12And it happened that while he was in one of the cities, behold, [there came] a man full of leprosy. And when he saw Jesus, he fell on [his] face and implored him, saying, "Lord, if you are willing, you can make me clean." 13And he stretched out [his] hand, and touched him, saying, "I am willing; be made clean." And immediately the leprosy departed from him. 14And he commanded him to tell no one; but "go and show yourself to the priest, and offer [the items] for your cleansing, just as Moses commanded, for a testimony to them."3 15But so much the more the word about him was going abroad; and large crowds were coming together to hear and to be cured of their sicknesses. 16But he kept withdrawing to desolate [places] and praying.

The Healing of a Paralytic
(Mt. 9:1-8; Mk. 2:1-12)

17And it happened on one of [those] days, that he was teaching, and there were Pharisees and teachers of the law sitting by, who had4 come from every village of Galilee and Judea and [from] Jerusalem; and the power of the Lord was in him to be healing.5 18And behold, men [were] bringing on a cot a man who was paralyzed, and they sought to bring him in and lay him before Jesus.6 19And when they did not find by what [way] they might bring him in, because of the crowd, they went up on the roof and let him down through the tiles with [his] cot into the midst before Jesus. 20And when he saw their faith he said, "Man, your sins have been forgiven you." 21And the scribes and the Pharisees began reasoning, saying, "Who is this that speaks blasphemies? Who can forgive sins except God alone?" 22But when Jesus perceived their reasonings,7 he answered by saying to them, "Why are you reasoning in your hearts? 23Which is easier, to say, 'Your sins have been forgiven you,' or to say, 'Rise and start walking'? 24But so that you may know that the Son of man has authority on earth to forgive sins"—he said to the one who was paralyzed—"I say to you, rise, and take up your cot and go to your house." 25And instantly he rose before them, and took up [that] on which he was lying, and went to his house, glorifying God. 26And surprise took them all, and they started glorifying God and were filled with fear, saying, "We have seen strange things today."

The Calling of Levi
(Mt. 9:9-13; Mk. 2:13-17)

27And after this he went out, and saw a tax collector, named Levi, sitting at the tax office; and he said to him, "Start following me." 28And he left everything behind, and rose and started following him.

29And Levi made him a great feast in his house, and there was a large crowd of tax collectors and others who were sitting [at the table] with them. 30And the Pharisees and their scribes started grumbling against his disciples, saying, "Why do you eat and drink with tax collectors and sinners?" 31And Jesus answered by saying to them, "Those who are healthy have no need for a doctor, but those who are ill [do]. 32I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance."

The Question about Fasting
(Mt. 9:14-17; Mk. 2:18-22)

33And they said to him, "John's disciples8 fast frequently and make petitions [to God], and so [do] the [disciples] of the Pharisees, but yours eat and drink." 34But Jesus said to them, "You cannot make the bridegroom's attendants9 fast while the bridegroom is with them, [can you]? 35But the days will come, whenever the bridegroom is taken away from them, and then they will fast in those days." 36And he was also telling them a parable: "No one tears a piece from a new cloak and puts [it] on an old cloak; otherwise, he will tear the new, and the piece from the new will not match the old. 37And no one puts new wine into old wineskins; otherwise, the new wine will burst the wineskins and it will be spilled, and the wineskins will be destroyed. 38But new wine must be put into fresh wineskins.10 39And no one who has drunk old [wine] wishes for new; for he says, 'The old is good.'"11

Picking Grain on the Sabbath

61Now it happened [that] on a sabbath,1 he was going through the grainfields, and his disciples were picking and eating the heads of grain, rubbing [them] in [their] hands. 2But some of the Pharisees said, "Why are you doing what is not permissible2 on the sabbaths?" 3And Jesus answered them by saying, "Have you not read this that David did when he was hungry, he and those who were with him: 4how he entered into the house of God, and took and ate the bread of the presentation, which it is not permissible [for any] except only the priests to eat, and [also] gave [it] to those with him?"3 5And he continued saying to them, "The Son of man is lord of the sabbath."4

And he rose and stood [there]. 9And Jesus said to them, "I ask you whether it is permissible on the sabbath to do good or to do evil, to save life or to destroy [it]?" 10And he looked around on them all, and said to him, "Stretch out your hand." The Choosing of the Twelve
(Mt. 10:1-4; Mk. 3:13-19)

12Now it happened [that] in these days he went out onto the mountain to pray; and he continued all night in prayer to God. 13And when it was day, he called his disciples, and chose from them twelve, whom he also named apostles: 14Simon, whom he also named Peter, and Andrew his brother, and James and John, and Philip, and Bartholomew, 15and Matthew, and Thomas, and James [the son] of Alphaeus, and Simon who was called the Zealot, 16and Judas [the son] of James, and Judas Iscariot, who became a traitor.

17And he came down with them and stood on a level place. And a large crowd of his disciples and a large multitude of people from all Judea and Jerusalem and the seacoast of Tyre and Sidon [were there], who came to hear him and to be healed of their diseases. 18And those who were troubled from unclean spirits were being cured. 19And all the crowd were seeking to touch him, because power was coming out from him and healing [them] all.

Love for Enemies and Retaliation
(Mt. 5:38-48; 7:12)

27"But I say to you who hear, Keep loving your enemies, keep doing good to those who hate you, 28keep blessing those who curse you, keep praying for those who abuse you. 29To the one who hits you on the cheek, keep offering the other also; and from the one who takes away your cloak do not withhold [your] tunic either. 30Keep giving to everyone who asks of you; and from the one who takes away your [goods] do not keep asking for [them] back. 31And just as you wish that men would do for you, do for them likewise.

32"And if you love those who love you, what credit is that to you? For even sinners love those who love them. 33For even if you are doing good to those who do good to you, what credit is that to you? Even sinners do the same. 34And if you lend [to those] from whom you hope to receive, what credit is that to you? The Source of Goodness
(Mt. 7:16-20; 12:33-35)

43"For there is no good tree that produces rotten fruit, nor again an unproductive9 tree that produces good fruit; 44for each tree is known by [its] own fruit. The Messengers from John the Baptist
(Mt. 11:2-19)

18The disciples of John told him about all these things. 19And John called to [him] a certain two of his disciples, and sent [them] to the Lord,7 saying, "Are you the Coming One, or should we be looking for another?"8 20And when the men had come to him, they said, "John the Baptist has sent us to you, saying, 'Are you the Coming One, or should we be looking for another?'"8 21In that hour he cured many of diseases and illnesses and evil spirits, and to many [that were] blind he gave [the ability] to see. 22And he answered by saying to them, "Go and tell John what you have seen and heard: the blind receive their sight, the crippled walk, lepers are cleansed, and the deaf hear, the dead are raised up, the poor have the gospel proclaimed to them. 23And blessed is [the one] who is not ensnared [in sin] by [rejecting] me."

24Now when the messengers of John had gone, he began speaking to the crowds about John: "What did you go out into the wilderness to look at? A reed shaken by the wind? 25But what did you go out to see? A man dressed in soft clothes? Behold, those who are [dressed] in fine clothing and live in luxury are in kings' [courts]. 26But what did you go out to see? A prophet? Yes, I say to you, and more than a prophet. 27This is [the one] about whom it is written,

And he replied, "Say on, Teacher!" 41A certain creditor had two debtors; one owed five hundred denarii,14 and the other fifty. 42Since they did not have [enough] to pay [him] back, he forgave [them] both. Therefore, which of them will love him more?" 43Simon answered by saying, "I suppose [the one] to whom he forgave more." And he said to him, "You have judged rightly." 44And turning toward the woman he said to Simon, "Do you see this woman? I entered into your house, you gave me no water for [my] feet, but she has showered my feet with [her] tears and wiped [them] with her hair. 45You gave me no kiss, but from [the time] I came in she has not ceased kissing my feet. 46You did not anoint my head with oil, but she has anointed my feet with ointment. 47Therefore I say to you, her sins, which are many, have been forgiven, because she loved much; but he who is forgiven little, loves little." 48And he said to her, "Your sins have been forgiven." 49And those who were sitting [at the table] with [him] began saying to15 themselves, "Who is this who even forgives sins?" 50And he said to the woman, "Your faith has saved you; go in peace."

And the twelve [were] with him, 2and [also] some other women who had been cured of evil spirits and sicknesses: Mary, called Magdalene, from whom seven demons had gone out, 3and Joanna, the wife of Chuza, Herod's foreman, and Susanna, and many others, who were providing1 for them2 out of their belongings.

The Parable of the Sower
(Mt. 13:1-9; Mk. 4:1-9)

4And when a large crowd came together and [people] from every city came to him, he said in a parable: 5"A sower went out to sow his seed; and as he was sowing, some [seed] fell beside the road, and was trodden underfoot, and the birds of the sky devoured it. 6And other [seed] fell on the rock; and as it grew up, it withered away, because it had no moisture. 7And other [seed] fell in the middle of thorns; and the thorns grew up with [it] and choked it. 8And other [seed] fell into good soil and grew up, and produced a hundredfold of fruit." As he was saying these things, he kept calling out, "The one who has ears to hear, let him hear."

The Purpose of Parables
(Mt. 13:10-17; Mk. 4:10-12)

9Now his disciples started asking him what this parable might mean. 10And he said, "To you it has been given to know the mysteries of the kingdom of God; but to the rest [they are] in parables, so that seeing they may not see, and hearing they may not comprehend.

22Now it happened one day that he got into a boat with his disciples, and he said to them, "Let us go over to the other side of the lake." And they launched [the boat], 23and as they sailed he fell asleep. And a windstorm came down on the lake, and they were filling [with water], and were in danger. 24And they came and woke him up, saying, "Master, Master, we are perishing!" And being awakened, he rebuked the wind and the waves of water; and they ceased, and there was a calm. 25And he said to them, "Where [is] your faith?" 26¹And they sailed down to the country of the Gerasenes,3 which is on the other side [of the lake] from Galilee. 27Now when he had come out onto the land, a certain man from the city who had demons met [him]; and for a considerable [period] of time he had worn no clothes,4 and he was not living in a house but in the tombs. 28And when he saw Jesus, he cried out and fell down before him, and said with a loud voice, "What have I to do with you, Jesus, Son of the Most High God? I implore you, do not torment me." 29For he was commanding the unclean spirit to come out from the man. (For many times it had seized him; he was kept bound with chains and shackles and guarded, and [yet] breaking the bonds, he kept being driven by the demon into the wilderness.) 30And Jesus asked him, "What is your name?" And he said, "Legion"; because many demons had entered into him. 31And they started appealing to him that he would not command them to depart into the abyss. 32Now a herd of a considerable [number] of pigs was feeding there on the mountain; and [the demons] appealed to him that he would give them permission to enter into these. And he gave them permission. 33And the demons came out from the man and entered into the pigs, and the herd rushed down the steep bank into the lake and were drowned.

34But when those who fed [them] saw what had happened, they fled, and told [it] in the city and in the country. 35Now [people] came out to see what had happened, and they came to Jesus, and found the man from whom the demons had gone, sitting at the feet of Jesus, clothed and sane; and they were afraid. 36And those who had seen [it] told them how the demon-possessed [man] had been made well.5 37And all the multitude of the region around that of the Gerasenes3 asked him to depart from them; because they were seized with great fear; and he got into a boat and returned. 38Now the man from whom the demons had gone started imploring him that he might be with him; but he sent him away, saying, 39"Return to your home, and start relating how much God did for you." And he went away, preaching throughout the whole city how much Jesus did for him.

The Healing of a Hemorrhaging Woman and Raising of a Dead Girl

Now as he was going, the crowds were almost crushing him. 43And a woman who had had a flow of blood for twelve years [and] who had spent [her] whole living on doctors7 and could not be cured by anyone 44came up behind [him], and touched the tassel of8 his cloak; and instantly her flow of blood stopped. 45And Jesus said, "Who [was] the one that touched me?" And when all denied [it], Peter9 said, "Master, the crowds are hemming you in and pressing against [you]!"10 46But Jesus said, "Someone touched me; for I perceived that power had gone out from me." 47Now when the woman saw that she did not escape notice, she came trembling, and falling down before him told in the presence of all the people for what reason she had touched him, and how she had been healed instantly. 48And he said to her, "Daughter, your faith has made you well,5 go in peace."

49While he was still speaking, someone from the synagogue ruler's [house] came* and said, "Your daughter has died; quit bothering the Teacher any longer." 50But when Jesus heard [this], he responded to him, "Quit being afraid; only believe, and she will be made well."5 51Now when he came to the house, he did not let anyone enter with him, except Peter and John and James, and the father and mother of the girl. 52And all were weeping and mourning for her; but he said, "Quit weeping; for she is not dead but sleeping." 53And they started laughing at him, knowing that she was dead. 54But11 taking her by the hand he called, saying, "Girl, arise." 55And her spirit returned, and she got up instantly; and he ordered that [something] should be given her to eat. 56And her parents were astounded, but he commanded them to tell no one what had happened.

The Sending Out of the Twelve
(Mt. 10:1, 7-14; Mk. 6:7-13)

91And he called the twelve together and gave them power and authority over all demons and to cure diseases, 2and he sent them out to preach the kingdom of God and to heal the sick.1 3And he said to them, "Take nothing for [your] journey, neither staff, nor bag, nor bread, nor silver; nor should you have two tunics apiece. 4And into whatever house you enter, stay there, and from there depart. 5And as many as do not receive you, when you depart from that city shake off the dust from your feet for a testimony against them." 6And they departed and started going through the villages, proclaiming the gospel and curing [people] everywhere.

Herod's Anxiety
(Mt. 14:1-2; Mk. 6:14-16)

7Now Herod the tetrarch heard [about] all that was happening, and he was puzzled, because it was being said by some that John had been raised from the dead, 8and by some that Elijah had appeared, and [by] others that a certain prophet from ancient [times] had risen. 9But Herod said, "John I beheaded; but who is this about whom I hear such things?" And he was seeking to see him.

The Feeding of the Five Thousand
(Mt. 14:13-21; Mk. 6:30-44; Jn. 6:1-14)

10And when the apostles had returned, they related to him what they had done. And he took them and withdrew privately to2 a city called Bethsaida. 11But when the crowds knew [about it], they followed him; and he welcomed them and started speaking to them about the kingdom of God, and healing those who had need of curing. 12Now the day began declining; and the twelve came and said to him, "Send the crowd away, so that they may go into the villages and country round about, and lodge and find provisions; because we are here in a desolate place." 13But he said to them, "You give them [something] to eat." And they said, "We do not have more than five loaves and two fish—unless we should go and buy food for all these people." 14For there were about five thousand [just counting] men. And he said to his disciples, "Make them sit down in groups [of] about fifty apiece." 15And they did so, and started making them all sit down. 16Now he took the five loaves and the two fish, and looking up to heaven, he blessed and broke them, and

started giving [them] to the disciples to set before the crowd. 17And all ate and were satisfied. And there was taken up twelve baskets of broken pieces that were left over to them.

Peter's Confession about Jesus and

Jesus' First Prediction of His Death and Resurrection

(Mt. 16:13-21; Mk. 8:27-31)

18And it happened that as he was praying alone the disciples were with him; and he questioned them, saying, "Who do the crowds say that I am?" 19And they answered by saying, "John the Baptist; and others, Elijah; and others, that a certain prophet from ancient [times] has risen." 20And he said to them, "But who do you say that I am?" And Peter answered by saying, "The Christ of God." 21But he warned and commanded them to tell this to no one, 22saying, "The Son of man has to suffer many things, and be rejected by3 the elders and chief priests and scribes, and be killed, and on the third day be raised."

Conditions of Discipleship
(Mt. 16:24-28; Mk. 8:34-9:1; Jn. 12:25)

23And he started saying to all, "If anyone wishes to come after me, he must deny himself and take up his cross daily4 and keep following me. 24For whoever wishes to save his life5 will lose it; and whoever loses his life5 for my sake, he will save it. 25For what is a man profited if he gains the whole world but loses or forfeits himself? 26For whoever is ashamed of me and of my words,6 of him will the Son of man be ashamed whenever he comes in his glory and [the glory] of the Father and of the holy angels. 27But I say to you truly, there are some of those standing here who shall not taste death until [after] they see the kingdom of God."

The Transfiguration
(Mt. 17:1-9; Mk. 9:2-10)

28Now it happened that about eight days after these sayings he took with him Peter and John and James, and went up onto the mountain to pray. 29And as he was praying, the appearance of his face became different, and his clothing [became] dazzling white. 30And behold, two men were talking to him, who were Moses and Elijah, 31who appeared in glory and started speaking of his

departure, which he was going to accomplish at Jerusalem. 32Now Peter and those [who were] with him were heavy with sleep, but since they stayed awake,7 they saw his glory and the two men who stood with him. 33And it happened [that] as the men8 were parting from him, Peter said to Jesus, "Master, it is a good [thing] for us to be here. Indeed, we should make three shelters,9 one for you and one for Moses and one for Elijah"—not knowing what he said. 34But while he was saying these things, a cloud came and started overshadowing them; and they were afraid as they entered into the cloud. 35And a voice came out of the cloud, saying, "This is my Son, [my] Chosen;10 be listening to him!" 36And when the voice had gone, Jesus was found alone. And they kept silent and told no one in those days anything of what they had seen.

The Healing of a Boy with an Unclean Spirit
(Mt. 17:14-18; Mk. 9:14-27)

37Now it happened that on the next day, when they had come down from the mountain, a large crowd met him. 38And behold, a man from the crowd cried [aloud], saying, "Teacher, I implore you to look at my son, because he is my only11 [child]; 39and behold, a spirit seizes him, and he suddenly cries out; it convulses him with foam [coming from his mouth], and bruises him, and scarcely departs from him. 40And I implored your disciples to cast it out, and they could not." 41And Jesus answered by saying, "O faithless and perverted generation, how long shall I be with you and put up with you? Bring your son here." 42Now while he was still coming, the demon knocked him down and convulsed [him]. But Jesus rebuked the unclean spirit, and healed the boy, and gave him back to his father. 43And all were astonished at the majesty of God.

Jesus' Second Prediction of His Death
(Mt. 17:22-23; Mk. 9:30-32)

But while they were all marveling at all the things which he was doing, he said to his disciples, 44"Let these words sink into your ears; for the Son of man is going to be delivered into

The Greatest in the Kingdom
(Mt. 18:1-5; Mk. 9:33-37)

46Now an argument arose among them as to who among them might be the greatest. 47But knowing the thought of their heart, Jesus took a child and stood him by his side, 48and said to them, "Whoever receives this child in my name receives me, and whoever receives me receives the one who sent me; for the one who is least among you—he is great."

The Man Not Following with the Disciples
(Mt. 9:38-40)

49And John answered by saying, "Master, we saw someone casting out demons in your name, and we tried forbidding him, because he does not follow with us." 50But Jesus said to him, "Do not be forbidding [him]; for he who is not against you12 is for you.12"

The Samaritans' Refusal to Receive Jesus

51Now it happened that when the days were approaching for him to be received up, he set [his] face to go to Jerusalem. 52And he sent messengers before him.13 And they went and entered into a village of the Samaritans, so as to make ready for him; 53but they did not receive him, because he13 was going to Jerusalem. 54And when [his] disciples James and John saw [this], they said, "Lord, do you wish us to tell fire to come down from heaven and consume them?"14 55But he turned and rebuked them.15 56And they went on to another village.

Hindrances to Discipleship
(Mt. 8:19-22)

57And as they were going along the road, someone said to him, "I will follow you wherever you go." 58And Jesus said to him, "The foxes have holes, and the birds of the sky [have] nests; but the Son of man has nowhere to lay [his] head." 59And he said to another, "Start following me." But

The Sending Out of the Seventy-two
(Mt. 9:37-38; 10:7-16)

101Now after this the Lord appointed seventy-two1 others, and sent them out [two] by two before him2 into every city and place where he himself was about to come. 2And he was saying to them, "Indeed, the harvest [is] plentiful, but the workers [are] few. Therefore implore the Lord of the harvest to send out workers into his harvest. 3Go your way; behold, I am sending you out as lambs in the midst of wolves. 4Carry no purse, no bag, no shoes; and greet no one on the way. 5And into whatever house you enter, first say, 'Peace to this house!' 6And if a son of peace is there, your peace will rest on him; but if not, it will return to you. 7And keep staying in the same house, eating and drinking what they provide, for the worker [is] worthy of his wages; do not keep moving from house to house. 8And into whatever city you enter and they receive you, eat what is set before you. 9And be curing the sick in it and saying to them, 'The kingdom of God has come near to you.' 10But into whatever city you enter and they do not receive you, go out into its streets and say, 11'Even the dust of your city that clings to us, on [our] feet, we wipe off against you; however, know this, that the kingdom of God has come near.' 12I say to you that it will be more tolerable in that day for Sodom than for that city.

Woes to Unrepentant Cities

16"The one who hears you hears me, and the one who rejects you rejects me, and the one who rejects me rejects the One who sent me."

The Return of the Seventy-two

17And the seventy-two1 returned with joy, saying, "Lord, even the demons are subject to us in your name!" 18And he said to them, "I was watching Satan fall like lightning from heaven. 19Behold, I have given you authority to tread upon snakes and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy; and nothing shall hurt you. 20However, do not be rejoicing in this, that the spirits are subject to you; but be rejoicing that your names are written in heaven."

The Rejoicing of Jesus
(Mt. 11:25-27; 13:16-17)

21In the same hour he was overjoyed in the Holy4 Spirit and said, "I praise you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, because you have hidden these things from the wise and intelligent and revealed them to infants; yes, Father, because so it was pleasing in your sight. 22All things have been delivered to me by my Father; and no one knows who the Son is except the Father, and who the Father is except the Son and [the one] to whom the Son may want to reveal [him]."

23And turning to the disciples he said privately, "Blessed [are] the eyes that see the things which you see! 24For I say to you that many prophets and kings wished to see the things which you see, and did not see [them], and to hear the things which you hear, and did not hear [them]."

The Lawyer's Question and the Great Commandment
(Mt. 22:34-40; Mk. 12:28-34)

25And behold, a certain lawyer stood up to test him by saying, "Teacher, what shall I do to inherit eternal life?" 26And he said to him, "What is written in the law? How do you read [it]?" 27And he answered by saying, "You shall love the Lord your God with5 all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your strength, and with all your mind;6 and your neighbor as yourself."7

29But wishing to justify himself, he said to Jesus, "And who is my neighbor?" 30Jesus replied by saying, "A certain man was going down from Jerusalem to Jericho, and he fell among bandits, who also stripped him and inflicted blows on [him], and departed, leaving [him] half dead. 31Now by coincidence a certain priest was going down on that road; and when he saw him he passed by on the other side. 32And likewise when a Levite who also happened [along] came upon the place and saw [him], he passed by on the other side. 33But a certain Samaritan, as he journeyed, came upon him; and when he saw [him], he had pity [on him], 34and went to [him] and bound up his wounds, pouring on olive oil and wine; and he set him on [his] own animal and brought him to an inn, and took care of him. 35And on the next day he took out two denarii8 and gave [them] to the innkeeper, and said, 'Take care of him; and whatever more you spend, I will repay you as I am coming back.' 36Which of these three do you think was a neighbor to the one who fell among the bandits?" 37And he said, "The one who showed mercy on him." And Jesus said to him, "Go and you keep doing likewise."

Martha and Mary

38Now as they were going [on their way], he entered into a certain village; and a certain woman named Martha received him [as a guest].9 39And she had a sister called Mary, who also sat at the Lord's10 feet and was listening to his word. 40But Martha was being distracted with much serving; and she came up to [him] and said, "Lord, does it not matter to you that my sister has left me to be serving alone? Tell her then that she should help me." 41But the Lord11 answered by saying to her, "Martha, Martha, you are worried and disturbed about many things; 42but [only] one thing is needful.12 For Mary13 has chosen the good part, which will not be taken away from her."

Teaching about Prayer
(Mt. 6:9-13; 7:7-11)

111And it happened [that] he was praying in a certain place, [and] when he ceased, one of his disciples said to him, "Lord, teach us to pray, just as John also taught his disciples." 2And he said to them, "Whenever you pray, say:

"Father,1 may your name be kept holy.2 May your kingdom come.3 3Keep giving us every day our daily bread.4 4And forgive us our sins, for we ourselves also forgive everyone who is indebted to us. And do not lead us into temptation."5

5And he said to them, "Which of you has a friend and will go to him at midnight and say to him, 'Friend, lend me three loaves, 6since a friend of mine has arrived from a journey to [visit] me, and I do not have [anything] to set before him'; 7and he will answer from within by saying, 'Quit giving me a hard time; the door has already been shut, and my children are with me in bed; I cannot get up to give you [anything]'? 8I say to you, even if he will not get up and give him [anything] because he is his friend, yet because of his impertinence6 he will rise and give him as much as he needs. 9And I say to you, keep asking, and it will be given to you; keep seeking, and you will find; keep knocking, and it will be opened to you. 10For everyone who asks receives, and the one who seeks finds, and to the one who knocks it will be opened. 11Now [if] a son asks for a fish from any father among you, will he indeed give him a snake instead of a fish? 12Or indeed, [if] he asks for an egg, will he give him a scorpion?7 13If you then, who are evil, know [how] to give good gifts to your children, how much more will the heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit8 to those who ask him!"

Beelzebul
(Mt. 12:22-30; Mk. 3:22-27)

14And he was casting out a demon, and it was mute. Now it happened [that] when the demon had gone out, the mute [person] spoke, and the people marveled. 15But some of them said, "He casts out the demons by Beelzebul,9 the prince of the demons"; 16and others, to test [him], started seeking from him a sign from heaven. 17But knowing their thoughts, he said to them, "Every kingdom divided against itself is made desolate, and household [divided] against household falls. 18Now if Satan also is divided against himself, how will his kingdom stand? Because you say that I am casting out demons by Beelzebul.9 19But if I am casting out the demons by Beelzebul,9 by whom do your sons cast [them] out? Therefore they shall be your judges. 20But if I am casting out the demons by the finger of God, then the kingdom of God has come upon you. 21Whenever a strong [man], fully armed, guards his [own] mansion, his belongings are at peace; 22but when [someone] stronger than he comes on [him] and overcomes him, he takes away his armor in which he had trusted, and distributes his spoils. 23The one who is not with me is against me, and the one who does not gather with me scatters.10

The Return of the Unclean Spirit

24"Whenever the unclean spirit has gone out from a man, it passes through waterless places seeking rest; and not finding [any], then11 it says, 'I will return to my house from where I came.' 25And when it comes, it finds [it]12 swept and decorated. 26Then it goes and brings seven other spirits more evil [than] itself, and they enter and dwell there; and the last [state] of that man becomes worse [than] the first."

29Now when the crowds were gathering even more, he began saying, "This generation is an evil generation; it seeks a sign, but no sign will be given to it except the sign of Jonah.13 30For just as Jonah became a sign to the [people] of Nineveh, so will the Son of man also be to this generation. 31The queen of the South will be raised at the judgment with the men of this generation and condemn them, because she came from the ends of the earth to hear the wisdom of Solomon, and behold, [something] greater [than] Solomon [is] here. 32The men of Nineveh will rise up at the judgment with this generation and condemn it, because they repented at the preaching of Jonah, and behold, [something] greater [than] Jonah [is] here.

33"No one after lighting a lamp puts [it] in a cellar nor under a peck-measure,14 but on a lampstand, so that those who enter may see the light. 34Your eye is the lamp of the body; whenever your eye is generous,15 your whole body is also full of light; but when it is grudging,16 your body [is] also full of darkness. 35Therefore look out lest the light in you is darkness. 36If then your whole body [is] full of light, not having any part dark, it will be wholly full of light, as when a lamp with [its] rays gives you light."

The Denunciation of the Pharisees and Lawyers
(Mt. 23:4, 6-7, 13, 23-36; Mk. 12:38-39; Lk. 20:46)

37Now as he spoke, a Pharisee asked* him to dine with him; and he went in and sat [at the table]. 38And when the Pharisee saw it, he marveled that he first was not immersed before dinner. 39And the Lord said to him, "Now you Pharisees clean the outside of the cup and of the platter, but the inside of you is full of swindling and wickedness. 40Senseless [people]! 45And one of the lawyers answered* by saying to him, "Teacher, in saying this you are insulting us also." 46And he said, "Woe to you lawyers also! Because you load men down with loads that are hard to carry, and you yourselves do not touch the loads with one of your fingers. 47Woe to you! Because you build the tombs of the prophets and your fathers killed them. 48So you are witnesses and consent to the works of your fathers; bacause they killed them, and you build [their tombs].19 49For this [reason] also the Wisdom of God said, 'I will send to them prophets and apostles, and [some] of them they will kill and persecute,' 50so that the blood of all the prophets that has been shed from the foundation of the world may be required from this generation, 51from the blood of Abel to the blood of Zechariah, who perished between the altar and the house [of God]. Yes, I say to you, it shall be required from this generation. 52Woe to you lawyers! Because you have taken away the key of knowledge; you did not enter yourselves, and you hindered those who were entering."

13And someone from the crowd said to him, "Teacher, tell my brother to divide the inheritance with me." 14But he said to him, "Man, who appointed me a judge or divider4 over you?" 15And he said to them, "Take heed, and keep guarding yourselves from all greed, because a man's life does not consist in the abundance of his belongings." 16And he told a parable to them, saying, "The land of a certain rich man brought forth plentifully; 17and he started reasoning within himself, 'What shall I do, because I have nowhere to store my crops?' 18And he said, 'I will do this: I will pull down my barns, and build larger ones; and there I will store all [my] wheat and my goods. 19And I will say to my soul, Soul, you have many goods laid up for many years; take your ease, eat, drink, be merry.' 20But God said to him, 'Senseless [man]! This night they are demanding your soul from you; and the things you have prepared, whose will they be?' 21Like this [is] the one who lays up treasure for himself and is not rich toward God."5

Worry
(Mt. 6:25-34)

22And he said to his disciples, "Therefore I say to you, do not be worrying [about your] life,6 what you shall eat, nor [about your] body, what you shall put on. 23For life6 is more [than] food, and the body [more than] clothing. 24Consider the ravens: [you see] that they neither sow nor reap, they have neither storeroom nor barn, and [yet] God feeds them. Of how much more value are you than the birds! 25And which of you by worrying can add a minute7 to his life-span?8 26If then you are not able to [do such] a very little thing, why do you worry about the rest? 27Consider the lilies, how they grow; they neither labor nor spin;9 yet I say to you, not even Solomon in all his glory clothed [himself] like one of these. 28But if God dresses the grass like this, which is alive in the field today and tomorrow is thrown into the oven, how much more [will he clothe] you, [O you] of little faith! 29And you must quit seeking what you shall eat and what you shall drink, and quit being anxious. 30For all the pagans of the world are seeking for these things; and your Father knows that you need these. 31Instead, keep seeking his kingdom,10 and these things shall be added to you. 32Quit being afraid, little flock, because it is your Father's good pleasure to give you the kingdom.

Treasure in Heaven

comes and knocks they may open [the door] to him immediately. 37Blessed [are] those slaves whom the lord finds watching when he comes; truly, I say to you, he will tie [his belt] and have them sit [at the table], and he will come and serve them. 38And if he comes in the second [watch], or in the third watch, and finds [them] like this, blessed are those [servants]! 39But know this, that if the householder had known in what hour the thief was coming, he11 would not have let his house be broken into. 40You be ready also; because the Son of man is coming at an hour when you do not think [he will]."

41And Peter said, "Lord, are you telling this parable for us or indeed for everyone?" 42And the Lord said, "Who then is the faithful [and] sensible steward, whom [his] lord will appoint over his staff, to give [them their] food-allowance at the [proper] time? 43Blessed [is] that slave whom his lord when he comes will find so doing. 44Truly I say to you that he will appoint him over all his belongings. 45But if that slave says in his heart, 'My lord is taking [his] time [about] coming,' and begins beating the menservants and the maidservants, and eating and drinking and getting drunk, 46the lord of that slave will come on a day when he does not expect [him] and at an hour he does not know, and will cut him in two, and assign him a place with the unbelievers. 47And that slave who knew his lord's will, and [yet] did not make ready or do according to his will, shall be beaten with many blows. 48But the one who did not know [it], and did things worthy of blows, shall be beaten [with] few [blows]. Now everyone to whom much is given, of him will much be required; and of him to whom [people] commit much they will ask the more.

Household Divisions
(Mt. 10:34-36; Mk. 10:38)

No, I say to you, but rather division; 52for from now [on] there will be five in one household divided, three against two and two against three; 53they will be divided, father against son and son against father, mother against daughter and daughter against [her] mother, mother-in-law against [her] daughter-in-law and daughter-in-law against [her] mother-in-law."13

Analyzing the Present Time
(Mt. 16:2-3)

54And he also was saying to the crowds, "Whenever you see a cloud rising in the west, immediately you say, 'A rain-storm is coming'; and so it happens. 55And whenever [you see] the south wind blowing, you say, 'There will be scorching heat'; and it happens. 56[You] hypocrites! You know how to analyze the appearance of earth and sky; but how [is it that] you do not know how to analyze14 this [present] time?

Settling with Your Opponent
(Mt. 5:25-26)

57"And indeed why do you not judge for yourselves what is right? 58For as you are going with your opponent before the ruler, make an effort to settle with him on the way, lest he drag you to the judge, and the judge will deliver you up to the constable, and the constable will throw you into jail. 59I say to you, you shall not come out of there until you have paid back the last cent."15

Repent or Perish

131Now there were some present at that very time who told him of the Galileans whose blood Pilate had mingled with their sacrifices. 2And he1 answered by saying to them, "Do you think that these Galileans were worse sinners than all the [other] Galileans, because they have suffered these things? 3I say to you, No; but unless you are repenting you will all likewise perish. 4Or those eighteen on whom the tower in Saloam fell and killed them, do you think that they were worse offenders than all the [other] men who dwelt in Jerusalem? 5I say to you, No; but unless you repent you will all perish in a similar way."

The Parable of the Barren Fig Tree

6And he started telling this parable: "A certain [man] had a fig tree planted in his vineyard; and he came seeking fruit on it and did not find [any]. 7And he said to the vinedresser, 'Behold, for three years I have come seeking fruit on this fig tree, and I have not found [any]. Therefore, cut

The Healing of a Crippled Woman on the Sabbath

10Now he was teaching in one of the synagogues on the sabbath. 11And behold, there was a woman who had had a spirit of sickness for eighteen years; and she was bent over and could not stand absolutely erect. 12And when Jesus saw her, he called [her] and said to her, "Woman, you are freed from your sickness." 13And he laid [his] hands on her, and instantly she was made straight, and she praised God. 14But the ruler of the synagogue, indignant because Jesus had cured on the sabbath, started saying to the crowd, "There are six days on which [a person] ought to be working; come on them and be cured, and not on the sabbath day." 15But the Lord answered him and said, "[You] hypocrites! Does not each of you on the sabbath untie his ox or [his] donkey from the manger, and lead [it] away to water [it]? 16And was it not necessary for this woman, who is a daughter of Abraham, whom Satan bound for, behold, eighteen years, to be loosed from this bond on the sabbath day?" 17And as he was saying these things, all his opponents were being put to shame; and all the crowd was rejoicing at all the glorious things that were done by him.

The Parable of the Leaven

Exclusion from the Kingdom

22And he was going through towns and villages, teaching, and making [his] way toward Jerusalem. 23And someone said to him, "Lord, [will] those who are saved [be] few?" And he said to them, 24"Keep struggling to enter through the narrow door; because many, I say to you, will seek to enter and will not be able. 25Whenever the householder has once risen up and shut the door, then you will begin standing outside and knocking at the door, saying, 'Lord, open to us.' And he will answer by saying to you, 'I do not know you [or] where you are from.' 26Then you will begin saying, 'We ate and drank in your presence, and you taught in our streets.' 27And [yet] he will indeed say to you,3 'I do not know you [or] where you are from; depart from me, all [you] workers of unrighteousness!' 28There will be weeping and gnashing of teeth there, whenever you see Abraham and Isaac and Jacob and all the prophets in the kingdom of God but you [yourselves] thrown outside. 29And [people] will come from east and west, and from north and south, and sit [at the table] in the kingdom of God. 30And behold, [some] are last who will be first, and [some] are first who will be last."

Luke 14

The Healing of a Man with Dropsy

141And it happened that when he went into the house of a certain one of the rulers who belonged to the Pharisees to eat bread on a sabbath, they were watching him. 2And behold, there was a certain man before him who had dropsy. 3And in response Jesus spoke to the lawyers and Pharisees, saying, "Is it permissible to cure on the sabbath, or not?" 4But they remained quiet. And he took [him] and healed him, and let [him] go. 5And he said to them, "Which of you shall have a son1 or an ox fall into a well shaft, and will not immediately pull him out on a sabbath day?" 6And they could not reply to this.

Teaching about Humility

7Now he started telling a parable to those who had been invited, when he noticed how they were choosing the places of honor, saying to them, 8"Whenever you are invited by anyone to a marriage feast, do not sit down in a place of honor, lest a more honorable [person] than you should have been invited by him; 9and the one who invited [both] you and him will come and say to you, 'Give place to this [person],' and then you will begin with shame to take the least [important] place. 10But whenever you are invited, go and sit in the least [important] place, so that whenever the one who has invited you comes he will say to you, 'Friend, go up higher'; then you will receive glory in the presence of all those who are sitting [at the table] with you. 11Because everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, and the one who humbles himself will be exalted."

12Now he was also saying to the one who had invited him, "Whenever you make a dinner or a supper, do not call [in] your friends nor your brothers nor your relatives nor rich neighbors, lest they also invite you in return, and that becomes your repayment. 13But whenever you make a feast, invite the poor, the disabled, the crippled, the blind, 14and you will be blessed, because they do not have [a way] to repay you. For you will be repaid at the resurrection of the just."

The Parable of the Great Supper
(Mt. 22:1-10)

was making a great supper, and invited many; 17and he sent his slave at the supper hour to say to those who had been invited, 'Come; because it is now ready.' 18But they all alike began making excuses. The first said to him, 'I have bought a farm, and I must go out and see it; I ask you, have me excused.' 19And another said, 'I have bought five yoke of oxen, and I am going to examine them; I ask you, have me excused.' 20And another said, 'I have married a wife, and therefore I cannot come.' 21And the slave came and told his lord these things. Then the householder was angry and said to his slave, 'Go out quickly into the streets and lanes of the city, and bring in here the poor and disabled and blind and crippled.' 22And the slave said, 'Lord, what you commanded has been done, and still there is room.' 23And the lord said to the slave, 'Go out into the highways and hedges, and compel [people] to come in, so that my house may be filled. 24For I say to you that none of those men who were invited shall taste my supper.'"

Conditions of Discipleship
(Mt. 10:37-38)

25Now large crowds were going with him; and he turned and said to them, 26"If anyone comes to me and does not hate his father and mother and wife and children and brothers and sisters and, in addition, even his [own] life, he cannot be my disciple. 27Whoever does not carry his [own] cross and come after me, cannot be my disciple. 28For which of you, wishing to build a tower, does not first sit down and count the cost, [to see] whether he has [enough] to complete [it]? 29Otherwise, when he has laid a foundation, and is not able to finish, all who observe [it] begin mocking him, 30saying, 'This man began building, and was not able to finish.' 31Or what king, going to encounter another king in war, will not sit down first and deliberate whether he is able with ten thousand to meet the one who is coming against him with twenty thousand? 32And if not, while he is still a long way off, he sends a delegation and asks for [terms] of peace. 33So therefore, anyone of you who does not say good-bye to all his belongings cannot be my disciple.

34"Therefore, salt [is] good; but if indeed the salt should lose its taste, with what will it be seasoned? 35It is fit neither for the land nor for the manure pile; [people] throw it outside. The one who has ears to hear, let him hear."

Luke 15

The Parable of the Lost Sheep
(Mt. 18:12-14)

151Now all the tax collectors and the sinners were coming near to him to hear him. 2And both the Pharisees and the scribes started grumbling, saying, "This [man] receives sinners and eats with them."

3And he told this parable to them, saying: 4"What man of you, if he has a hundred sheep and loses one of them, does not leave behind the ninety-nine in the wilderness, and go after the one which is lost, until he finds it? 5And when he has found [it], he lays [it] on his shoulders, rejoicing. 6And when he comes home, he calls together [his] friends and [his] neighbors, saying to them, 'Rejoice with me, because I have found my sheep which was lost.' 7I say to you that there will be [more] joy like this in heaven over one sinner who repents than over ninety-nine [persons] who have no need for repentance.

The Parable of the Lost Coin

8"Or what woman, having ten drachmas,1 if she loses one drachma, does not light a lamp and sweep the house and seek carefully until she finds [that coin]? 9And when she has found [it], she calls together [her] friends and neighbors, saying, 'Rejoice with me, because I have found the drachma which I had lost.' 10Just so, I say to you there is joy before the angels of God over one sinner who repents."

The Parable of the Prodigal Son

11And he said, "A certain man had two sons; 12and the younger of them said to [his] father, 'Father, give me the part of the property that falls [to me].' And he divided [his] living between them. 13And not many days after [that], the younger son gathered all [he had] and went on a journey into a distant country, and there he squandered his property in wasteful living. 14And when he had spent everything, a severe famine arose in that country, and he began to be in need. 15And he went and joined himself to one of the citizens of that country, and he sent him into his fields to feed pigs. 16And he was desiring to eat [his] fill of2 the carob pods that the pigs were eating; and no one was giving him [anything]. 17But when he came to himself he said, 'How many of my father's hired servants have enough bread to spare, but I am perishing here in the famine! 18I will arise and

go to my father, and I will say to him, "Father, I have sinned against heaven and before you; 19I am no longer worthy to be called your son; make me like one of your hired servants."' 20And he arose and came to his father. But while he was still at a distance his father saw him and had pity, and ran and embraced him3 and kissed him. 21And the son said to him, 'Father, I have sinned against heaven and before you; I am no longer worthy to be called your son.'4 22But the father said to his slaves, 'Bring out quickly the best robe, and put [it] on him; and put a ring on his hand, and shoes on [his] feet; 23and bring the fattened calf [and] kill [it], and let us eat and be merry; 24because this my son was dead, and is alive again; he was lost, and is found.' And they began being merry.

25"Now his older son was in the field; and as he came and neared the house, he heard music and dancing. 26And he called one of the servants5 and started inquiring what these things possibly meant. 27And he said to him, 'Your brother has come, and your father has killed the fattened calf, because he has received him back healthy.' 28But he was angry and was not willing to go in. And his father came out and started appealing to him, 29but he answered by saying to [his] father, 'Behold, so many years I have been serving you, and I never transgressed your command; and [yet] you never gave me a kid, that I might be merry with my friends. 30But when this son of yours came, who has devoured your living with prostitutes, you killed the fattened calf for him!' 31And he said to him, '[My] child, you are always with me, and all that is mine is yours. 32But it was necessary to be merry and rejoice, for this your brother was dead, and is alive; and he was lost, and is found.'"

The Parable of the Unrighteous Steward

161Now he was also saying to the disciples, "There was a certain rich man who had a steward, and charges were brought to him that this [man] was wasting his belongings. 2And he called him and said to him, 'What [is] this [that] I hear about you? Give [me] the account of your stewardship, for you can no longer be steward.' 3And the steward said to himself, 'What shall I do, because my lord is taking the stewardship away from me? may receive me into their houses.' 5And he called for each one of his lord's debtors and started saying to the first, 'How much do you owe my lord?' 6And he said, 'A hundred baths1 of olive oil.' And he said to him, 'Take your bill, and sit down quickly and write fifty.' 7Then he said to another, 'And how much do you owe?' And he said, 'A hundred cors2 of wheat.' He said* to him, 'Take your bill, and write eighty.' 8And the lord commended the unrighteous steward because he had acted sensibly; because the sons of this age are more sensible in their [own] generation than the sons of light. 9And I say to you, make friends for yourselves by means of unrighteous wealth,3 so that whenever it fails4 they may receive you into the eternal habitations.

Faithfulness with Wealth
(Mt. 6:24)

10"The one who is faithful in a very little is faithful also in much; and the one who is unrighteous in a very little is unrighteous also in much. 11Therefore, if you have not been faithful in the unrighteous wealth,3 who will entrust to you the true [riches]? 12And if you have not been faithful in that which is another's, who will give you that which is your own?5 13No servant can be serving two masters;6 for either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot be serving God and wealth."3

14Now the Pharisees, who were lovers of money, were listening to all these things, and they were ridiculing him. 15And he said to them, "You are those who justify yourselves before men, but God knows your hearts; because what is exalted among men [is] an abomination before God.

The Law and the Kingdom of God
(Mt. 5:18; 11:12-13)

The Rich Man and Lazarus

19"Now there was a certain rich man, and he used to clothe [himself] in purple and fine linen and make merry in a splendid manner every day. 20And a certain poor [man] named Lazarus, who was covered with sores, lay at his gate 21and desired to be fed with what fell from the rich [man's] table; besides [this], the dogs were also coming and licking his sores. 22Now it happened [that] the poor [man] died and he was carried by the angels to Abraham's bosom. Now the rich [man] also died and was buried; 23and in Hades he lifted up his eyes, being in torments, and saw* Abraham at a distance and Lazarus in his bosom. 24And he called out and said, 'Father Abraham, have mercy on me, and send Lazarus so that he may dip the tip of his finger in water and cool my tongue; because I am suffering painfully in this flame.' 25But Abraham said, '[My] child, remember that you in your lifetime received your good things, and Lazarus in like manner evil things; but now he is comforted here, and you are suffering painfully. 26And besides all this, between us and you a great chasm has been fixed, in order that those who wish to pass from here to you may not be able; nor may [anyone] cross from there to us.' 27And he said, 'Then I ask you, father, that you would send him to my father's house, 28for I have five brothers, that he may warn them, lest they also come to this place of torment.' 29But Abraham said*, 'They have Moses and the prophets; they must hear them.' 30And he said, 'No, father Abraham; but if someone should go to them from the dead, they will repent.' 31But he said to him, 'If they do not hear Moses and the prophets, neither will they be persuaded if someone should rise from the dead.'"

Snares to Sin and Forgiveness
(Mt. 18:6-7, 15, 21-22; Mk. 9:42)

171And he said to his disciples, "It is impossible for the snares [to sin] not to come; but woe [to him] through whom they come! 2It would be better for him if a millstone were placed around his neck and he were thrown into the sea, than that he should ensnare one of these little ones [in sin]. 3Take care [as] to yourselves; if your brother sins,1 rebuke him, and if he repents, forgive him; 4and if he sins against you seven times in the day, and seven times turns to you, saying, 'I repent,' you shall forgive him."

Useless Slaves

7"But which of you, who has a slave plowing or shepherding [a flock], will say to him when he has come in from the field, 'Come immediately and sit down [at the table]'? 8Will he not rather say to him, 'Prepare [food] on which I may dine, and tie [your belt] and serve me, until I eat and drink; and after this you shall eat and drink'? 9He does not thank the slave because he did what was commanded, [does he]?2 10So you also, whenever you have done all that is commanded you, say, 'We are useless slaves; we have [only] done what we ought to do.'"

The Cleansing of Ten Lepers

11And it happened that as he was going to Jerusalem he was passing through the middle of3 Samaria and Galilee. 12And as he entered a certain village, there met [him] ten men who were lepers, who stood far away 13and raised [their] voices, saying, "Jesus, Master, have mercy on us." 14And when he saw [them] he said to them, "Go and show yourselves to the priests." And it happened [that] as they were going they were cleansed. 15Now one of them, when he saw that he was cured, turned back, glorifying God with a loud voice; 16and he fell on [his] face at Jesus'4 feet, giving him thanks. And he was a Samaritan. 17But Jesus answered by saying, "Were not ten cleansed? But where [are] the nine? 18Were not [any] found to return and give glory to God except this foreigner?" 19And he said to him, "Rise and go [your way]; your faith has made you well."

(Mt. 10:39; 24:17-18, 23, 26-28, 37-41; Mk. 13:15-16, 19-21; Jn. 12:25)

22And he said to the disciples, "The days will come when you will desire to see one of the days of the Son of man, and you will not see [it]. 23And they will say to you, 'Behold, there!' or 'Behold, here!' Do not go nor run after [them]. 24For just as the lightning that flashes from one [side] of the sky gives light to the other [side] of the sky, so shall the Son of man be in his day.7 25But first he has to suffer many things and be rejected by this generation. 26And just as it was in the days of Noah, so shall it also be in the days of the Son of man. 27They were eating, they were drinking, they were marrying, they were being given in marriage, until the day that Noah entered into the ark, and the flood came and destroyed [them] all. 28Likewise just as it was in the days of Lot—they were eating, they were drinking, they were buying, they were selling, they were planting, they were building, 29but on the day that Lot went out from Sodom it rained fire and sulphur from heaven and destroyed [them] all—30in [that] same [way] shall it be on the day when the Son of man is revealed. 31On that day, he who is on the housetop, with his goods in the house, must not go down to take them away; and likewise the one who is in the field must not turn back. 32Keep remembering Lot's wife. 33Whoever seeks to secure8 his life9 will lose it, and whoever shall lose [his life] will preserve it. 34I say to you, in that night there will be two [men] on one cot; one will be taken and the other will be left. 35There will be two [women] grinding together; one will be taken but the other will be left."10 37And they answered* by saying to him, "Where, Lord?" And he said to them, "Where the body [is], there the vultures11 will also be gathered together."

The Parable of the Widow and the Judge

181And he started telling them a parable to the [effect that] they ought always to keep praying and not be losing heart, 2saying, "In a certain city there was a judge who did not fear God and did not respect man. 3Now there was a widow in that city and she kept coming to him and

saying, 'Give me justice against my adversary.' 4And for a time he was not willing; but afterwards he said to himself, 'Even though I do not fear God nor respect man, 5yet because this widow is giving me a hard time, I will give her justice, so that in the end she will not come and give me a blackeye.'"1 6And the Lord said, "Hear what the unrighteous judge says. 7And shall not God grant justice for his chosen ones, who cry to him day and night? And will he delay long over them? 8I say to you that he will grant them justice speedily. However, when the Son of man comes, will he find faith on the earth?"

The Parable of the Pharisee and the Tax Collector

9Now he also told this parable to some who trusted in themselves that they were righteous and scorned the rest [of the people]: 10"Two men went up into the temple [complex] to pray, one a Pharisee and the other a tax collector. 11The Pharisee stood and started praying these things with himself,2 'God, I thank you that I am not like the rest of mankind: swindlers, unrighteous, adulterers, or even like this tax collector. 12I fast twice a week, I give tithes of all that I get.' 13But the tax collector, standing at a distance, was not willing to lift up [his] eyes to heaven, but kept beating his chest, saying, 'God, be merciful3 to me, the sinner!' 14I say to you, this [man] went down to his house justified rather than the other; because everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, but the one who humbles himself will be exalted."

Blessing the Children
(Mt. 19:13-15; Mk. 10:13-16)

15Now they were bringing even babies to him so that he might touch them. But when the disciples saw [it], they started rebuking them. 16But Jesus called for them, saying, "Let the children keep coming to me, and quit hindering them; for to such belongs4 the kingdom of God. 17Truly, I say to you, whoever does not accept the kingdom of God like a child shall not enter into it."

The Rich Ruler
(Mt. 19:16-30; Mk. 10:17-31)

18And a certain ruler asked him [a question], saying, "Good Teacher, what shall I do to inherit eternal life?" 19And Jesus said to him, "Why do you call me good? No one [is] good except One, [that is], God. 20You know the commandments: 'Do not commit adultery, Do not murder, Do not steal, Do not testify falsely, Honor your father and mother.'"5 21And he said, "All these I have kept from [my] youth." 22And when Jesus heard [it], he said to him, "One thing you still lack. Sell all that you have and distribute to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; and come, start following me." 23But when he heard this he became very sorrowful, for he was extremely rich.

24And when Jesus saw that he was very sorrowful,6 he said, "With what difficulty those who have wealth enter into the kingdom of God! 25For it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a [surgical] needle than for a rich man to enter into the kingdom of God." 26Now those who heard [it] said, "Who indeed can be saved?" 27But he said, "The things that are impossible with men are possible with God." 28And Peter said, "Behold, we have left [our] own [homes] and followed you." 29And he said to them, "Truly, I say to you that there is no one who has left house or wife or brothers or parents or children, for the sake of the kingdom of God, 30who shall not receive many times more in this time, and in the age to come eternal life."

Jesus' Third Prediction of His Death and Resurrection
(Mt. 20:17-19; Mk. 10:32-34)

31Now taking the twelve, he said to them, "Behold, we are going up to Jerusalem, and all the things that have been written through the prophets for the Son of man will be accomplished. 32For he will be delivered to the Gentiles, and will be mocked and mistreated and spit on. 33And they will whip [him] and kill him, and on the third day he will rise." 34And [yet] they comprehended none of these things; and this saying was hidden from them, and they did not know what was being said.

The Healing of a Blind Beggar
(Mt. 20:29-34; Mk. 10:46-52)

But he started crying out [even] much more, "Son of David, have mercy on me!" 40And Jesus stood still, and commanded him to be brought to him; and when he came near, he asked him, 41"What do you wish me to do for you?" And he said, "Lord, [I wish] that I might receive my sight." 42And Jesus said to him, "Receive your sight; your faith has made you well." 43And instantly he received his sight and started following him, glorifying God. And when all the people saw [it], they gave praise to God.

Zacchaeus
(Mt. 18:11)

191And he entered and was passing through Jericho. 2And behold, [there was] a man called by the name of Zacchaeus; and he was a chief tax collector, and he [was] rich. 3And he was seeking to see who Jesus was, and [yet] could not, on account of the crowd, because he was small of stature. 4And he ran on ahead and climbed up into a sycamore tree to see him, because he was going to pass that [way]. 5And when Jesus came to the place, he looked up and said to him, "Zacchaeus, hurry and come down; for today I have to stay at your house." 6And he hurried and came down, and received him [as a guest with] rejoicing. 7And when they saw [it] they all started grumbling, saying, "He has gone in to lodge with a man who is a sinner." 8And Zacchaeus stood and said to the Lord, "Behold, Lord, the half of my belongings I give to the poor; and if I have extorted anything from anyone, I give back four times as much." 9And Jesus said to him, "Today salvation has come to this house, because he also is a son of Abraham. 10For the Son of man came to seek and to save the lost."

The Parable of the Minas
(Mt. 25:14-30; Mk. 13:34)

11And as they heard these things, he proceeded to tell a parable, because he was near Jerusalem, and they were thinking that the kingdom of God was going to appear any instant. 12Therefore, he said, "A certain nobleman went into a distant country to receive a kingdom for himself and [then] return. 13And calling ten of his slaves, he gave them ten minas [of money],1 and

said to them, 'Trade [with these] until I come.' 14But his citizens hated him and sent a delegation after him, saying, 'We do not wish this [man] to reign over us.' 15And it happened that when he came back, having received the kingdom, he commanded these slaves, to whom he had given the money, to be called to him, so that he might know what they had gained by trading.2 16Now the first arrived, saying, 'Lord, your mina has earned ten minas more.' 17And he said to him, 'Well [done], good slave! Because you have been faithful in a very little, have authority over ten cities.' 18And the second came, saying, 'Lord, your mina has made five minas.' 19And he also said to him, 'And you be over five cities.' 20And another came, saying, 'Lord, behold, [here is] your mina, which I kept laid away in a handkerchief; 21for I was afraid of you, because you are a strict man; you take up what you did not lay down, and reap what you did not sow.' 22He said* to him, 'Out of your [own] mouth I will judge you, [you] wicked slave! You knew, [did you], that I am a strict man, taking up what I did not lay down and reaping what I did not sow? 23Why then did you not put my money in the bank, and at my coming I would have collected it with interest?' 24And he said to those who stood by, 'Take the mina from him, and give [it] to the one who has the ten minas.' 25And they said to him, 'Lord, he has ten minas!' 26'I say to you, that to everyone who has will [more] be given; but from the one who does not have, even what he has will be taken away. 27However, [as for] these enemies of mine, who did not wish me to reign over them, bring [them] here and slaughter them before me.'"

The Triumphal Entry into Jerusalem
(Mt. 21:1-9; Mk. 11:1-10; Jn. 12:12-19)

28And when he had said this, he started going ahead, going up to Jerusalem. 29And it happened [that] as he drew near to Bethphage and Bethany, at the mount that is called Olives, he sent two of the disciples, 30saying, "Go into the village opposite [you], in which as you enter you will find a colt tied, on which no man has ever yet sat; and untie it and bring [it here]. 31And if anyone asks you, 'Why are you untying [it]?' you shall say this, 'The Lord has need of it.'" 32And those who had been sent went away and found [it] just as he had said to them. 33And as they were untying the colt, its owners said to them, "Why are you untying the colt?" 34And they said, "The Lord has a need for it." 35And they brought it to Jesus, and throwing their cloaks on the colt they set Jesus on

Peace in heaven and glory in the highest!" 39And some of the Pharisees from the crowd said to him, "Teacher, rebuke your disciples." 40And he answered by saying, "I say to you, if these keep quiet, the [very] stones will cry out."

A Second Lament over Jerusalem

41And as he came near and saw the city he wept over it, 42saying, "If [only] you, even you, had known in this3 day the things [that make] for3 peace! But now they are hidden from your eyes. 43[This is] because the days shall come upon you, when your enemies will throw up fortifications4 against you and surround you, and hem you in on every side, 44and level [you] to the ground, you and your children within you, and they will not leave [one] stone on another in you; because you did not know the time of your visitation."

The Cleansing of the Temple
(Mt. 21:12-13; Mk. 11:15-18; Jn. 2:13-16)

45And he entered into the temple [courtyard] and began driving out those who were selling,5 46saying to them, "It is written, 'And my house shall be a house of prayer';6 but you have made it a den of bandits."7

47And he was teaching daily in the temple [courtyard]. But the chief priests and the scribes and the prominent [men] of the people were seeking to destroy him; 48and [yet] they could not find what they might do, for all the people were hanging on his [words] that they heard.

The Question about Jesus' Authority
(Mt. 21:23-27; Mk. 11:27-33)

201And it happened [that] on one of the days as he was teaching the people in the temple [courtyard] and proclaiming the gospel, the chief priests and the scribes with the elders came up 2and spoke to him, saying, "Tell us by what authority you are doing these things, or who it is that

The Parable of the Wicked Tenant Farmers
(Mt. 21:33-46; Mk. 12:1-12)

9Now he began telling this parable to the people: "A certain man planted a vineyard, and rented it to tenant farmers, and went on a journey for a considerable period of time. 10And at the [proper] season he sent a slave to the tenant farmers, so that they should give him [his share] of the fruit of the vineyard; but the tenant farmers beat him, and sent [him] away empty-handed. 11And he proceeded to send another slave; but they beat him also, and dishonored [him], and sent [him] away empty-handed. 12And he proceeded to send a third; but they also wounded him and threw [him] out. 13Now the lord of the vineyard said, 'What shall I do? I will send my beloved son; perhaps2 they will respect him.' 14But when the tenant farmers saw him, they started reasoning with one another, saying, 'This is the heir; let us kill him, so that the inheritance may be ours.' 15And they threw him outside the vineyard and killed [him]. Therefore, what will the lord of the vineyard do to them? 16He will come and destroy these tenant farmers, and give the vineyard to others." When they heard [this], they said, "Definitely not!" 17But he looked at them and said, "What then is this that is written:

'A stone which the builders rejected—
this has become the head of the corner?'3
18Every one who falls on that stone will be broken to pieces; but on whomever it falls, it will crush him." 19And the scribes and the chief priests sought to lay hands on him in [that] same hour, and [yet] they feared the people; for they knew that he had spoken this parable with reference to them.

And they said, "Caesar's." 25And he said to them, "Then pay back to Caesar the things that are Caesar's, and to God the things that are God's." 26And they were not able in the presence of the people to take hold of a [single] word of his; and marveling at his answer they were silent.

The Question about the Resurrection
(Mt. 22:23-33, 46; Mk. 12:18-27, 34b)

27Now there came to [him] some of the Sadducees, those who say that there is no resurrection, 28and they asked him [a question], saying, "Teacher, Moses wrote for us that if someone's brother dies, having a wife and [yet] he was childless, his [living] brother should take the wife and raise up offspring for his brother.7 29Therefore, there were seven brothers; and the first took a wife, and died childless; 30and the second8 31and the third took her, and indeed in a similar way [all] seven left behind no children and died. 32Afterward the woman also died. 33Therefore, in the resurrection, to which of them will the woman be wife? For [each of] the seven had her [as] wife."

34And Jesus said to them, "The sons of this age marry and are given in marriage; 35but those who are considered worthy to attain to that age and to the resurrection from the dead neither marry nor are given in marriage, 36for they cannot die any more, for they are equal to angels and are sons of God, being sons of the resurrection. 37But that the dead are raised, even Moses showed, in [the passage about] the bush, when he says the Lord [is] the God of Abraham and the God of Isaac and the God of Jacob.9 38Now he is not God of the dead, but of the living; for all are living to him." 39And some of the scribes answered by saying, "Teacher, you have spoken well." 40For they were not daring to ask him anything any more.

The Denunciation of the Scribes
(Mt. 23:1-2, 6-7, 14; Mk. 12:38-40; Lk. 11:43)

45And in the hearing of all the people he said to his disciples,11 46"Beware of the scribes, who like to go around in long robes, and love greetings in the marketplaces and the seats of honor in the synagogues and the places of honor in the banquets, 47who devour widows' houses and for a pretense make long prayers. Do not go after them. 9Now whenever you hear [about] wars and revolutions, do not be terrified; for these things have to happen first, but the end [is] not immediately."

10Then he continued saying to them, "Nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom; 11and there will be great earthquakes, and in [various] places famines and epidemics; and there will be fearful events and great signs from heaven. 12But before all these things they will lay their hands on you and persecute [you], delivering [you] up to the synagogues and jails, and you will be brought before kings and governors for my name's sake. 13[This] will turn out [to be an opportunity] for you to [give] testimony. 14Settle [it] therefore in your hearts, not to meditate beforehand [how] to answer; 15for I will give you a mouth and wisdom, which none of your opponents will be able to withstand or contradict. 16Now you will be delivered up even by parents and brothers and relatives and friends, and [some] of you they will have put to death. 17And you will be hated by all because of my name. 18And [yet] not a hair of your head shall perish. 19By your endurance you must gain2 your lives.3

20"But whenever you see Jerusalem surrounded by armies, then know that its desolation has come near. 21Then those who are in Judea must start fleeing to the mountains, and those who are in the midst of the city4 must start departing, and those who are [out] in the country must not enter into it, 22because these are days of vengeance, to fulfill all that is written. 23Woe to those who are pregnant and to those who are nursing [babies] in those days! Preparation for the Passover
(Mt. 26:17-19; Mk. 14:12-16)

7Now the day of Unleavened Bread came, on which the passover [lamb] had to be sacrificed. 8And [Jesus] sent Peter and John, saying, "Go and prepare the passover for us, so that we may eat [it]." 9And they said to him, "Where do you wish us to prepare [it]?" 10And he said to them, "Behold, when you have entered into the city, a man carrying a pitcher of water will meet you; follow him into the house into which he enters. 11And you shall say to the householder of [that] house, 'The Teacher says to you, Where is the guest room, where I might eat the passover with my disciples?' 12And he will show you a large upper room furnished; there prepare [it]." 13And they went, and found [it] just as he had said to them; and they prepared the passover.

(Mt. 19:28; 20:25-28; Mk. 10:42-45)

24A dispute also arose among them [as to] which of them was reputed to be the greatest. 25But he said to them, "The kings of the Gentiles lord it [over] them; and those who have authority over them are called benefactors. 26Now [it must] not [be] like this with you; but the greatest among you must become as the youngest, and the leader as the one who serves. 27For which is greater, the one who sits [at the table], or the one who serves? [Is it] not the one who sits [at the table]? But I am in your midst as the one who serves.

28"And you are those who have continued with me in my trials. 29And I assign a kingdom to you, just as my Father assigned [it] to me, 30so that3 you may eat and drink at my table in my kingdom. And you will sit on thrones judging the twelve tribes of Israel.

The Prediction of Peter's Denial
(Mt. 26:31-35; Mk. 14:27-31; Jn. 13:36-38)

31"Simon, Simon,4 behold, Satan demanded [to have] you, that he might sift [you] like wheat, 32but I have implored [God] about you so that your faith might not fail; and when you have turned again, strengthen your brothers." 33But he said to him, "Lord, I am ready to go with you both to jail and to death." 34But he said, "I say to you, Peter, a rooster will not crow today until5 you three times deny that you know me."

Purse, Bag, Shoes, and Sword

35And he said to them, "When I sent you out without a purse and bag and shoes, you did not lack anything, [did you]?" And they said, "Nothing." 36And he said to them, "But now, the one who has a purse must take [it], and likewise a bag. And the one who does not have a sword must sell his cloak and buy [one]. 37For I say to you that this which is written has to be accomplished in me, 'And he was reckoned with outlaws';6 for what [is written] about me is being accomplished."7 38And they said, "Lord, behold, here [are] two swords." And he said to them, "It is enough."

Jesus' Prayers in Gethsemane
(Mt. 26:30, 36-46; Mk. 14:26, 32-42; Jn. 18:1)

39And he came out, and went, as was [his] custom, to the Mount of Olives; and the disciples also followed him. 40And when he came to the place he said to them, "Be praying that you may not enter into temptation." 41And he withdrew from them about a stone's throw, and falling to [his] knees, he started praying, 42"Father, if you want to, remove this cup from me; however, may not my will, but yours, be done." 43And there appeared to him an angel from heaven, strengthening him. 44And being in agony he started praying more earnestly; and his sweat became like great drops of blood falling down on the ground.8 45And when he rose from prayer, he came to the disciples and found them asleep from sorrow, 46and he said to them, "Why are you sleeping? Rise and keep praying that you may not enter into temptation."

The Betrayal and Arrest of Jesus
(Mt. 26:47-56; Mk. 14:43-50; Jn. 18:2-12)

47While he was still speaking, behold, [there came] a crowd, and the one called Judas, one of the twelve, was preceeding them. And he came near Jesus to kiss him. 48But Jesus said to him, "Judas, are you betraying the Son of man with a kiss?" 49And when those who were around him saw what would follow, they said, "Lord, shall we strike with the sword?" 50And a certain one of them struck the slave of the high priest and chopped off his right ear. 51But Jesus answered by saying, "Let it stop with this!" And he touched [his] ear and healed him. 52Now Jesus said to the chief priests and captains of the temple [complex] and elders, who had come against him, "Have you come out as against a bandit, with swords and clubs? 53When I was with you every day in the temple [courtyard], you did not stretch out [your] hands against me. But this is your hour, and the authority of darkness."

Peter's Denial of Jesus
(Mt. 26:57-58, 69-75; Mk. 14:53-54, 66-72; Jn. 18:12-18, 25-27)

54Now they arrested him and led [him] away and brought him into the high priest's house. But Peter was following at a distance. 55And when they had kindled a fire in the middle of the courtyard and sat down together, Peter started sitting among them. 56But a certain maid saw him as he sat in the light, and looking intently at him, she said, "This man was also with him." 57But he denied [it], saying, "Woman, I do not know him." 58And after a little while another [person] saw him and said,

"You also are [one] of them." But Peter said, "Man, I am not." 59And after an interval of about one hour some other [person] started insisting [it], saying, "In truth this [man] was also with him; for indeed he is a Galilean." 60But Peter said, "Man, I do not know what you are talking about." And instantly, while he was still speaking, a rooster crowed. 61And the Lord turned and looked at Peter. And Peter remembered the word of the Lord, that he had said to him, "Before a rooster crows today, you will deny me three times." 62And he went outside and wept bitterly.9

Jesus Before the Council
(Mt. 26:63-68; 27:1; Mk. 14:61-65; 15:1; Jn. 18:19-24)

63And the men who were holding Jesus10 were mocking him and beating [him]; 64and blindfolding11 him, they were12 questioning [him], saying, "Prophesy! Who is it that struck you?" 65And they were saying many other things aginst him, slandering [him].

66And when day came, the [Jewish] eldership of the people gathered together, both chief priests and scribes; and they led him away to their council,13 and they said, 67"If you are the Christ, tell us." And he said to them, "If I tell you, you will not believe; 68and if I ask [you], you will not answer.14 69But from now [on] the Son of man will be sitting at the right [hand] of the power of God." 70And they all said, "Are you therefore the Son of God?" And he said to them, "You are saying that I am." 71And they said, "What further need do we have for testimony? For we have heard [it] ourselves from his [own] mouth."

Jesus Before Pilate
(Mt. 27:2, 11-13; Mk. 15:1-4; Jn. 18:28-38)

231And the whole multitude of them arose, and led him before Pilate. 2And they began accusing him, saying, "We found this [man] perverting our nation, and forbidding [people] to pay taxes1 to Caesar, and saying that he himself is Christ a king." 3Now Pilate questioned him, saying,

"Are you the King of the Jews?" And he answered by replying, "You are saying [it]." 4And Pilate said to the chief priests and the crowds, "I find no guilt in this man." 5But they started becoming insistent, saying, "He stirs up the people, teaching throughout all Judea, beginning from Galilee even to here."

Jesus Before Herod

6Now when Pilate heard [this],2 he asked whether the man was a Galilean. 7And when he found out that he was from Herod's jurisdiction, he sent him over to Herod, who was himself also in Jerusalem in these days. 8Now when Herod saw Jesus, he rejoiced very [much], for he had been wishing to see him for a long time, because he had been hearing about him, and he was hoping to see some sign done by him. 9And he started questioning him at considerable length; but he answered him nothing. 10And the chief priests and the scribes stood by, vehemently accusing him. 11And indeed Herod with his soldiers scorned him and mocked [him]; then, dressing [him] in splendid apparel, he sent him back to Pilate. 12And both Herod and Pilate became friends with one another on [that] same day, for previously they had been living with hostility between themselves.

Jesus Before Pilate Again
(Mt. 27:15-26; Mk. 15:6-15; Jn. 18:39-19:16)

13And when Pilate had called together the chief priests and the rulers and the people, 14he said to them, "You brought me this man as one who was perverting the people; and, behold, having examined [him] before you, I found no guilt in this man regarding the things of which you are accusing him. 15And neither did Herod, for he sent him back to us.3 And behold, nothing worthy of death has been done by him. 16I will therefore discipline him and release [him]."4 18And they all cried out together, saying, "Away with this [man], and release to us Barabbas"—19one who had been thrown in jail for a certain revolt which happened in the city, and [for] murder. 20And Pilate addressed them again, wishing to release Jesus. 21And [yet] they kept calling out, saying, "Crucify, crucify him!" 22And a third time he said to them, "Why, what evil has he done? I have found in him no guilt [deserving] death; I will therefore discipline him and release [him]." 23But they started pressing, demanding with loud voices that he should be crucified. And their voices5 started

The Road to the Cross
(Mt. 27:31-32; Mk. 15:20-21)

26And as they led him away, they took hold of a certain Simon, who was a Cyrenian, who was coming [in] from the country, and laid on him the cross, to carry [it] behind Jesus. 27And there was following him a large multitude of the people, and of women who were mourning and lamenting him. 28But turning to them Jesus said, "Daughters of Jerusalem, do not be weeping for me, but be weeping for yourselves and for your children. 29Because, behold, the days are coming in which they will say, 'Blessed [are] the barren, and the wombs that never bore, and the breasts that never nourished [a child]!' 30Then they will begin saying to the mountains, 'Fall on us'; and to the hills, 'Cover us.' 31Because if they do these things when the tree is full of sap, what will happen when it is dry?"

The Crucifixion of Jesus
(Mt. 27:33-56; Mk. 15:22-41; Jn. 19:17-30)

32And two others also, who were criminals, were being led away with him to be killed. 33And when they came to the place which is called The Skull, there they crucified him, and the criminals, one on the right and one on the left. 34And Jesus was saying, "Father, forgive them; for they do not know what they are doing."6 Now to divide his clothes they threw [gambling] lots. 35And the people stood by, looking on. But the rulers were even ridiculing [him], saying, "He saved others; let him save himself, if he is the Christ of God, the Chosen One!" 36And the soldiers also mocked him, coming up and offering him vinegar, 37and saying, "If you are the King of the Jews, save yourself!" 38Now there was also an inscription over him,7 "This [is] the King of the Jews."

39And one of the criminals who were hanged was slandering him by saying, "Are not you the Christ? Save yourself and us!" 40But in response the other rebuked him, saying, "Do you not even

fear God, since you are under the same sentence of condemnation? 41And we indeed justly; for we are receiving [punishment] worthy of what we did; but this [man] has done nothing wrong." 42And he started saying, "Jesus, remember me whenever you come into8 your kingdom." 43And he said to him, "Truly, I say to you, today you will be with me in Paradise."

44And it was already about the sixth hour, and there was darkness over the whole land9 until the ninth hour, 45while the sun['s light] failed.10 And the curtain of the temple was torn down the middle. 46And calling out with a loud voice, Jesus said, "Father, into your hands I commit my spirit!" And having said this he expired. 47Now when the centurion saw what had happened, he started glorifying God, saying, "Certainly this man was innocent!"11 48And all the crowds who came together for this sight, when they observed the things that happened, started returning [home] beating [their] chests. 49And all his acquaintances and the women who had followed him from Galilee stood at a distance and saw these things.

The Burial of Jesus
(Mt. 27:57-61; Mk. 15:42-47; Jn. 19:38-42)

50And behold, [there was] a man named Joseph, who was a member of the council, a good and righteous man. 51He had not consented to their intention and deed. [He was a man] from Arimathea, a city of the Jews, who was waiting for the kingdom of God. 52He went to Pilate and asked for the body of Jesus. 53And he took it down and wrapped it in a linen sheet, and laid him in a rockhewn tomb, where no one had ever yet been laid. 54And it was the day of Preparation, and the sabbath was drawing on.12 55And the women who had come with him from Galilee followed, and saw the tomb, and how his body was laid. 56And they returned, and prepared spices and ointments.

The Resurrection of Jesus
(Mt. 28:1-8; Mk. 16:1-8, 11; Jn. 20:1-10)

And on the Sabbath they rested according to the commandment. 241But on the first [day] of the week, at early daybreak, they went to the tomb, carrying the spices which they had prepared.1 2And they found the stone rolled away from the tomb, 3but when they entered [it] they did not find the body of the Lord Jesus.2 4And it happened that as they were puzzled about this, behold, two men stood by them in dazzling apparel. 5And as they were afraid and bowed [their] faces to the ground, [the men] said to them, "Why are you seeking the living among the dead? 6He is not here, but has been raised.3 Remember how he spoke to you, while he was still in Galilee, 7saying, 'The Son of man has to be delivered into the hands of sinful men, and be crucified, and on the third day rise.'" 8And they remembered his words, 9and returning from the tomb4 they told all these things to the eleven and to all the rest. 10Now they were Mary Magdalene and Joanna and Mary the [mother] of James. And the rest [of the women] with them were saying these [same] things to the apostles. 11And [yet] these words appeared to them as nonsense, and they would not believe them. 12But Peter rose and ran to the tomb. And stooping to look in, he saw* the linen cloths by themselves. And he went back to his [home], marveling at what had happened.5

The Appearance on the Road to Emmaus
(Mk. 16:12-13)

13And behold, two of them were going [that] same day to a village named Emmaus, which was sixty stades6 distance from Jerusalem. 14And they were conversing with one another about all these things that had occurred. 15And it happened that while they were conversing and discussing [together], Jesus himself came near and started going with them. 16But their eyes were kept from recognizing him. 17And he said to them, "What [are] these words that you are exchanging with one

another as you are walking along?" And they stood still, looking sad.7 18And one [of them], named Cleopas, answered by saying to him, "Do you sojourn alone in Jerusalem and do not know the things that have happened in it in these days?" 19And he said to them, "What things?" And they said to him, "The things about Jesus the Nazarene,8 who was a prophet powerful in [his] work and word before God and all the people, 20and how our chief priests and rulers delivered him up to be condemned to death, and crucified him. 21Now we were hoping that he was the One who was going to redeem Israel. But indeed, besides all these things, this is the third day since these things happened. 22But also, some women of our company astounded us. They were at the tomb around daybreak 23and when they did not find his body, they came back saying that they had even seen a vision of angels, who said that he was alive. 24And some of those who were with us went to the tomb, and found [it] like this, just as the women had indeed said; but him they did not see." 25And he said to them, "O [you] who are senseless and slow of heart to believe on all that the prophets have spoken! 26Was it not necessary for the Christ to suffer these things and enter into his glory?" 27And beginning from Moses and from all the prophets, he explained to them in all the scriptures the things concerning himself.

28And they came near to the village to which they were going, and he acted like he was going farther. 29And they strongly urged him, saying, "Stay with us, because it is towards evening and the day has already declined." And he went in to stay with them. 30And it happened [that] as he sat [at the table] with them, he took the bread and blessed and broke [it], and started giving [it] to them. 31And their eyes were opened and they recognized him; and he disappeared from their [sight]. 32And they said to one another, "Were not our hearts burning within us9 while he was speaking to us on the road, while he was opening to us the scriptures?" 33And they rose [that] same hour and returned to Jerusalem. And they found the eleven gathered together and those who were with them, 34who said, "The Lord has really been raised, and has appeared to Simon!" 35And they started describing the things [that had happened] on the road, and how he was known to them in the breaking of the bread.

The Appearance to the Disciples
(Mt. 16:14; Jn. 20:19-20)

36Now as they were speaking these things, [Jesus] himself stood in their midst and said to them, "Peace to you!"10 37But they were terrified and afraid, and supposed that they were looking at a spirit. 38And he said to them, "Why are you troubled, and why are doubts arising in your hearts? 39See my hands and my feet, that it is I myself; feel of me, and see; because a spirit does not have flesh and bones as you see that I have." 40And when he had said this, he showed them [his] hands and [his] feet.11 41And while they still disbelieved from joy, and marveled, he said to them, "Do you have anything here to eat?" 42And they gave him a piece of broiled fish,12 43and he took [it] and ate before them.

The Giving of the Great Commission
(Mt. 28:19; Mk. 16:15)

44And he said to them, "These [are] my words which I spoke to you, while I was still with you, that all the things written about me in the law of Moses and the prophets and the psalms have to be fulfilled." 45Then he opened their minds to comprehend the scriptures, 46and he said to them, "Thus it is written13 for the Christ to suffer and rise from the dead the third day, 47and that repentance for14 the forgiveness of sins should be preached in his name to all nations, beginning from Jerusalem.15 48You [are] witnesses of these things. 49And behold, I am sending the promise of my Father on you; but you must stay in the city,16 until you are clothed with power from on high."

(Mk. 16:19; Acts 1:9-11)

50And he led them out as far as Bethany, and lifting up his hands he blessed them. 51And it happened [that] while he was blessing them, he departed from them and was carried up into heaven.17 52And they worshiped him, and18 returned to Jerusalem with great joy, 53and were continually in the temple [courtyard] blessing19 God.20
