EARLY CHURCH LEADERS ON BAPTISM IN THE SPIRIT

IRENAEUS, 2nd century AD quoted from Proof of the Apostolic Preaching, trans. Smith, p. 74--in reference to mankind, he writes,
"purifying their souls and their bodies through the baptism of water and of the Holy Spirit"

TERTULLIAN, 2nd/3rd century AD found in On Baptism, chap. 10, quoted from Ante-Nicene Fathers, vol. III, p. 674. trans. Thelwall
"saying that he [John] 'baptized in repentance only, but that One would shortly come who would baptize in the Spirit and fire;'--of course because true and stable faith is baptized with water, unto salvation; pretended and weak faith is baptized with fire, unto judgment."

ORIGEN, 3rd century AD, from Exhortation to Martyrdom
"it is impossible to be baptized a second time with water and the Spirit for the forgiveness of sins,"

ANONYMOUS, 3rd/4th century AD found in Treatise on Re-Baptism, quoted from Ante-Nicene Fathers, vol. V from paragraph 4, found on p. 669
"Because the Holy Scripture has affirmed that they who should believe in Christ, must needs be baptized in the Spirit;"

from paragraph 10, found on p. 673
"And thus, as our salvation is founded in the baptism of the Spirit, which for the most part is associated with the baptism of water, . . ."
